What age / How to start a duck dog?

Got a chocolate lab pup about a month ago. He loves to retrieve tennis balls and sticks already at 3 months old. And I have some books and videos on order Ultimate Duck Dog book and video as well as an obediance video. But until they get here I don't want to do any damage in the training when should I go full bore on the training?
Any tips on what I can do in the interm to give him a good start.

Send the dog to me, I will train the dog for you. Just kidding. You start training your dog the day you bring it home. Buy the book "Training your Retreiver" by James Lamb Free. Takes the training from 6 week puppy to full grown gun dog/field champion.
 
Nothing wrong with getting them interested in birds early, wings and frozen birds are good tools to get the little one interested. PLEASE take the time to introduce guns SLOWLY... My english pointer enjoyed hunting ALL her life and loved guns... Her sister/littermate's first exposure to guns was a 12 gauge and she NEVER hunted again... Take a gun out of the case and she is GONE...

nice pup. I trained my pup last year and gladly everthing turned out well. i was nervous as well and did not want to ruin my dog. I saturated myself in videos and books long before i bought my pup. the book i relied on the most was "The working retrievers" by Tom Quinn. since you have just got your pup at this stage obedience is your main concern. besides playing fetch games under no pressure and playing wing on a string for the first 5 months all i worked on was come, stay, and heel. after 5 months i invested in a training collar. (dogtra, one that vibrates). I worked along with my books and videos and eventually had a dog that was trained to what i needed in the field. i made a list of expectations at the beginning and with alot of PATIENCE i met my goal. I would post pictures of her first actual hunt but im not quite sure how to do it yet but she retrieved 3 limits of birds in 45 minutes in a beaver pond with no lossed birds. She did great as will yours. Just be patient in everything and that dog wil want to please you. ONE step at a time.

It is my understanding that using sticks will cause a dog to be hard mouthed. I never did use them on my chocolate and never had a problem.

Alos, never let you dog do the tug-of-war with anything it retrieves. I just give the command "drop" and she does. No games.

Use a whistle. It's better than yelling.

Keep it fun, but the training started here on day one and is still going 4yrs later. Consistancy is the key.

SuperCub, what is your address. I want to come over and steal your dog. Just kidding. Good looking dog for sure. My next one will be a chocolate. Maybe this summer, maybe this spring. Hell, I can't wait. Anyone know a reputable quality field Lab breeder???

Best piece of advice you can ever get on training a dog.

You can start them right from day one, just remember they are only a pup and have a very short attention span. Also set realistic expectations for yourself and the dog.
