What ammo can I use in my 1 in 12 twist AR-15?

I’ve always been able to get the 55grain 5.56 or .223 but that seems to be drying up so I’m going to have to start buying something else. I’ve seen some 56 grain stuff too – would this stabilize or does it have to be 55 grain or less?

My question is what is cheap and will stabilize. I can’t seem to find a clear answer on this; some people say it’s the bullet weight that matters while others tell me it’s the shape and length.

Can I shoot the cheap 43 grain hollow point Winchester from Walmart?

Thank you

Jeff

43,45,55 grain is ideal for that rifling twist. It's is the original configuration. They say the heavier 62+ grain may keyhole. I'm sure "experts" can chime in.

Just make sure that the ammo you choose, has a crimp in Bullet. Sometimes cheap will cost you, more than $$$.

Just my .02

DITTO!!!

keep that 45gr #### for bolt guns

The best choice for your AR is ammo using bullets with a cannellure..a groove
that the neck of the case can be crimped into..prevents the bullet from being
pushed into the case, resulting in an overpressure situation when fired.
The problem with the 45GR. ammo is that a lot of it is hollow point, the tip of
which can hang up on the feed ramps...resulting in a FTF (failure to feed) or
else, again, pushing the bullet into the case...a KABOOM waiting to happen!
When you're buying ammo, inspect a sample and make sure that there is a
groove (cannellure) and you should be good to go.
Again, with the slower twist (1 in 12), stick to the lighter bullets....

1 in 9 is your 'all around' twist rate. Anything from 45-62 will work, and some even use heavier.

1 in 7 is best suited for 62grn plus... your milage may vary, but this is a general rule.

What about one in ten just out of curiousity. I have match grade? Olympic arms stainless steel barrel mated to my dlask and was wondering what would be the best route to go to utilise the barrel to its best performance etc etc.

With my 24" 1:10 twist bull barrel I have had excellent results (1/4" 5 shot groups) with handloaded Sierra 52 gr. HPBT Match bullets and sub .35" groups with handloaded Hornady 52 gr. A-Max bullets.
