Hey everyone,

I'm trying to find out which kinds of ammunition (bullets) are most popular with hunters, especially in Canada? This is for any firearm.

Your input would be appreciated, thanks.

How long is a piece of string?
Hunting bullets are most popular with hunters.
Your question is way too broad based; focus.

Ummm, consider what you plan on hunting first of all. What calibre of rifle do you have/plan to own? What ranges do you feel comfortable shooting from? Are we talking dangerous game or varmint? Are you shooting in heavy cover or in open plain?

There are just too many variables to answer this question properly.

That aside, if varmint, I'd go either .22lr in 40gr. or CB caps (if penetration is a concern) or .223 in 55-62gr. for open plain. .223 is cheap and there's lots of "dope" available and you can get up to 75 grain if your barrel has a 1:7 twist rate. If bigger, I'd say .308 in 150-180 gr WIN or .30-06 in the same or higher weight. Both are great starters and easily available anywhere in Canada. Both are good to go up to about polar bear/grizzly (although they'll serve in a pinch if you do your part).

I'm going to go ahead and assume you're thinking about your first rifle purchase considering this is your first post. Consider getting a .22lr, like a savage bolt action or a ruger 10/22 and practice, practice, practice. The skills you learn with a .22 are the same skills you'll apply to a higher calibre rifle. The rest is just recoil ;)

Welcome to CGN!

Critical flaws in the question....AMMUNITION then bullets than any firearm.

Way to many variables. Ammunition does not equal bullets.

Person asking the question would appear to little or no knowledge of firearms and hunting.

Relax, its their first post....we were all there once too...

Armour piercing when going after Brinks trucks, incendiary when taking on senior citizens at the local Co-Op and buckshot for the neighborhood problematic cats.;) These are forms of hunting!!

In order of ammunition sales or cartridges fired, I think the order would be like this:

.22 Long rifle rim fire ( most popular BY FAR)
12 Gauge ( including target loads, many of which are used for hunting)
.308 or .30-06, probably close to a tie. 30-06 might be more popular as a pure hunting round, but .308 enjoys the use of more target shooters, most of whom are also hunters.

I don't think it is practical to separate target shooting and hunting. Too much overlap!
There! that wasn't so hard.

I agree with Longwalker and if you are just starting out buy a 22 LR rifle and practice, practice, practice. The 22 LR are very inexpensive to practice with. After six months move up to a 308 or 30-06 and again practice, practice, practice. You will need a 12 gauge for small game and to practice you can get someone to fire off clays for you.
