I recently purchased a 700 VS in .223, with a 1/12 barrel.
Trying to get out to my farm in a few days when it arrives, really anxious to shoot it.

I'd like to try to shoot to around 300 yards at least, whats a good gr?

Should i go for 55 or 62?

The local shop by my house has a few in 55, but .62 looks like i'd have to order in.

ugh okay, I'm going to Lebarons, i think they have a couple brands in .55...is one generally regarded better than another?

It may not shoot 62gr bullets with a 1:12 barrel. Should be fine with bullets up to 55gr.

I've had good luck with the Walmart special 40round packs of 45grn HP's.

They were the most accurate out of my 1:12 .223 (Norinco AR15).

But as mentioned, probably not worth your time with 62grn. The twist rate is too slow to stabilize the slightly longer bullet.

62's have worked fine in mine in the past, but they have to be loaded warm/hot or launched though a reasonably long rifle. 1:12 won't do for a 62gr in an m4 carbine, for example, because it's short barrel limits speed and therefore RPM of the bullet.

Nevertheless, 300 isn't really that far away, and even the 45 whitebox should give satisfactory results

You can research the Greenhill Optimum twist calculator on the Internet, if interested. It says that a 68gr Hornady BTHP at about 3100 fps will stabilize at 1 in 13 or faster.

A 1 in 12 twist will stabilize said bullet down to about 2750 fps or so
