I recently got into a new-to-me 12 gauge pump, and I'm looking for a good price to stock up on sporting shells. Best I've seen in the local retail stores is ~40 cents/shell for Winchester #7 1/2 shot.

Western metals has a sale (though sold out) for Fiocchi #8 for ~34 cents/shell.

Anywhere else I should check out or steer clear of?

Are you a member of a club? If so check with the people running trap if they do group buys.
At the club I'm with they do a group buy a few times a year and last time it ended up being $0.26 + tax per round

Not a club member. We shoot clays on private land, very amateur but we have fun! I'll hit up a local club and see if I can buy from them though. Thanks.

wait for a sale
you can get them as low as ¢25

Anyplace in particular?

Run, don't walk, from the Winchester promo loads...

I have been working through a box of cheap $hit Winchester sporting shells from about 12 years ago. I have no complaints other than I'm running low. Are they really that bad?

last flat I got this past summer from my local Canadian Tire (Rio brand, 7½ target loads) was $59.99 on sale.
that's ¢24 a shell

Cabelas sold me a case for the price of a box... $8.99 for 250 shells or $0.036/shell. Didn't notice until I got home and checked my receipt.

I'm new to shooting at clays too. Trying to get my bearings for 12 and 20 gauge ammo. Feeling kinda lost actually and not seeing any decent looking pricing. Will have to keep looking and watching for sales now I guess. Tenda is my go to for 9mm but shotgun ammo, naw.

What exactly is a Winchester promo load and what is wrong with it? I bought and shot some win USA ammo today that was 7.99 a box pre tax. Perhaps I'm new enough to not know any better. Most of the misses I had today were definitely my fault. There were a couple that I was scratching my head about but. I figure likely I'm the problem. I was actually very happy hitting half of what I shot at for my first time out.

Promo loads of all the major manufacturers have less hardness to the shot, thus producing less reliable patterns. Premium loads like Winchester AA, Remington STS and Federal Gold Medal have high antimony shot having maximum hardness. There is a reason for premium priced ammo.

You are right, cheap loads are not the reason for misses at pasture Trap or the 16 yard line. It can make a difference to high end shooters shooting Handicap Trap.

The cheapest of the Promo loads are often deficient in quality control these days, with bobbled crimps and damaged metal base - Winchester Universal being the worst offender, in my experience.

Some guns have trouble extracting the steel head promo loads from some manufacturers, largely due to mismatch of chamber tolerances vs. cartridge head diameter.
Having said that, I have never had a failure to extract, with a very wide variety of shotguns and cheap ammunition.

You have to shop the sales to get the best price on shotshells, or have access to a shooting club's bulk buy.

Winchester AA come on sale every year in early Summer, and offers a $2 a box mail-in rebate, if you decide to buy top quality ammunition.
Otherwise, the best deal on economy ammunition that I have seen recently was Federal Top Gun at Cabelas on Canada Day, $65 per flat. If you had a $20 off coupon, when spending $150, you could get 2 flats plus a couple of boxes for $6.70 a box, two taxes included, here in Saskatoon. I cannot load shotgun shells for that low a price with the cost of components these days, particularly the cost of shot.

Just an FYI if you are not a member of the club from which you wish to get in on a group buy your chances of getting in on that buy are likely ZERO. Clubs doing group buys are not purchasing ammo for the club but are getting a bunch of its member in on an order to help the members each save on their ammo purchase to enable them to shoot more targets at their own club or clubs they travel to during the shooting season.

Cabela's would have target loads around the $7-8/box on sale.

Their best price at Abbotsford last weekend was $8.49/box on challenger. Their case pricing was 10x the box pricing.

Bass pro had some on sale i saw yesterday for $69 a case, dont recall what it was & am kicking myself that i didnt buy a case, or four. Ah well, guess now, not only do i watch 9mm and 22lr prices carefully, im also now watching 12 and 20g target loads. I think i see more ammo cans in my future.

Hummason's in Ancaster, Ontario have Winchester Super Targets and AAs available and can have a skid load drop shipped in Canada. Contact Brian at 905-648-3430. The current selling price for the Super Targets is $65.00 per flat plus tax.

That same thing happened to me. It was a pricing error. I brought a case to the till and I noticed it scanned at 8.99. When she told me the total I asked her if I could go get 3 more. So I got 4 cases and I sat their in the parking lot wondering if I should get more. This was at the Nanaimo location. The next day I went back for more but they had already fixed the price.
