protection of exotics?
I do admit baging such an animal Is something... and read some of the replies above... but THERE ARE LAWS concerning harvesting an escaped exotic animal.
An escaped Elk, bison, wild boar or whatever is, here in Quebec, considered someone's private property (like CATTLE). There are no legal means for someone that comes accross such an animal in the bush to harvest it unless it is the owner of the animal or someone mandated by him. Like most prov-fed regulations, they are splitting hairs and making something simple (invasive species = not supposed to run free) complicated.
I know this because I came face to face with a cow elk(tag on the ear) and a calf this spring... just north of Montreal! I asked game wardens about the status of such an animal.
Wardens won't even shoot it on sight (or so they say...). They have to see if this type of animal was declared missing from a breeder , if recovery attemps have been made , blablabla,,, the former owner, if discovered, might even get a fine for letting an exotic escape.
In the case of Wild Boar, their policy issupposed to be the erradication of escapees... but with their current slow policy, we'll have a good breeding population in a few years before they start shooting. Bye bye ecosystem.
So... All this to say that If I were your friend, I'd keep quiet. Congrads! He did the good thing.
