What animal is that?

There are lot's of elk and exotics around here too, but what a pain in the ass it is to drag them over those 8 foot fences.
Don't let anyone tell it is easy to shoot through chain link fence either... much skill is required!

Non-indigenous animals are not permitted to run wild. A neighbor of mine shot a red deer/elk trying to get into his llama pen. He phoned MNR to check, they told him to put it down and they told him where it came from/owners name. The owner also said shoot it.
I've also seen beef cattle shot after escaping into the bush for the summer. If they couldn't be caught they can't be permitted to roam. Just the risk of to the driving public demands that they be put down.

protection of exotics?

I do admit baging such an animal Is something... and read some of the replies above... but THERE ARE LAWS concerning harvesting an escaped exotic animal.

An escaped Elk, bison, wild boar or whatever is, here in Quebec, considered someone's private property (like CATTLE). There are no legal means for someone that comes accross such an animal in the bush to harvest it unless it is the owner of the animal or someone mandated by him. Like most prov-fed regulations, they are splitting hairs and making something simple (invasive species = not supposed to run free) complicated.

I know this because I came face to face with a cow elk(tag on the ear) and a calf this spring... just north of Montreal! I asked game wardens about the status of such an animal.

Wardens won't even shoot it on sight (or so they say...). They have to see if this type of animal was declared missing from a breeder , if recovery attemps have been made , blablabla,,, the former owner, if discovered, might even get a fine for letting an exotic escape.

In the case of Wild Boar, their policy issupposed to be the erradication of escapees... but with their current slow policy, we'll have a good breeding population in a few years before they start shooting. Bye bye ecosystem.

So... All this to say that If I were your friend, I'd keep quiet. Congrads! He did the good thing.

Any Exotics or non-indigenous animals are not covered under the Fish and Game act... and they should not be running wild. Good job by your Buddy. If I see a Nilgai, a Fallow Deer, a Russian Boar or a Giraffe for that matter on any of our properties guess what... Game On.... I'm eating exotic!

It's a good thing a Sasquach didn't step out!

As for the poster claiming loose cattle can be shot do not try that i Sask. They are prvate property. Here there are regulations similar to the ones mentioed for buffalo, elk etc in Quebec. There have been situations of wild boar getting lose and in certain cases being open to unregulated harvest.
Also be aware that the free ranging of cattle is permitted in parts of Sask for various parts of the year.
Even in areas with a ban on free range shooting a cow or horse is a very good way to see the farmer and his neighbours turn staunchly anti-hunting.

Let me get this straight...If I raise boar, elk, bison, llamas or deer...ITs ok to shoot if it gets out of its pen....but if I raise cattle....no shooting? thats weird!

The cattle were found and killed at the request of the owner. It was an issue of liability. It was cheaper to get a couple of hunters to put the critters down than to buy some unsuspecting driver a new car.

That would be a neat topic ,what round to use for Giraffe?

They are pressure suited just like the astronaughts, because to bend down and drink then raise thier heads back up is several gee forces!!

So thier skin is the thickest of any mamal on earth!!! I can't remember but maybe three to four inches thick!!!!

So definatly shot placement would be right(UP)there!!!! That thing looked like a bearded ellan or something!!!

Bob

"some unsuspecting driver a new car" what? in some areas you hit a loose cow you buy the guy a new cow not the other way...and when i lived in North Van i was told buy a cop that if i hit an elk/deer/moose on the Cypress Mountain access road it was the same as hiiting a pedestrian as i was probably not paying attention.....

I be it tstes good, and I hear they're a ##### to kill.

Maybe time to start a new defense thread
