I have found quite a number of natural mineral licks, that the animals discovered. I'm talking abut central BC and the deer licks were often just a roadside cut in the earth. We did once find a huge deer lick in an area not used by humans, plus from the air I found a huge, a monster moose mineral lick. It was so large that it could be seen on a government aerial photograph, taken at 30,000 feet above ground level. It had the appearance of a monster wheel, with the moose paths coming to the hub, like spokes on a wheel. At that time, mans closest approach to it was a trail about two miles away.
Also, two of us once sat in the evening above timber line and watched 32 mountain goats come to a mineral lick and they stayed at the lick until we couldn't see them anymore because of darkness.
Some funny things about these licks, commonly called salt licks. I have tasted the soil from several and it never tasted like salt! I once talked to a game biologist about this and he said the animals knew which mineral their body needed and would find it and form a lick.
Also, from my own observation, mineral licks are just used in summer and early fall. I have never seen a moose lick used after early September. I think deer licks are about the same.
