What would you guys suggest would be a good compromise for a 300 yard varmint killer and a 500 yard tack driver.[gun maker and caliber]. I would like to spend no more than $1000.00 on this firearm not including optics. Weight is not an issue because my varmint hunting would be done with a bipod or shooting sticks. I would be hunting mostly coyotes, gophers and ground hogs.

Fast twist .223 or a 22-250.
Don't buy a new Rem. if you actually want to take it outside to use it though.
Consider the Savage they can be had under 1K.

500 yd tack driver? You mean you want to shoot paper to 500 yds.
Your not going to hit a "tack" at that range but if you want to get close
I recommend a 6mm of some kind. My 6mmBR for example is an excellent
varmint slayer out to 500 yds and paper puncher to 800 yds.
I believe Savage chambers for this.

Actually, if you don't hand load, the 6br would not be a good idea.
Probably like Icepick says, a .223 with a fast twist. Tikka makes the T3 Varmint
in .223 w/1:8 twist.

no need for a super fast twist if your only going to 500yds a 1-12ROT will stabilize 63gr'ers out of a .22-250 thats all you need. I was shooting 350yds last weekend 55gr vmax well below max had no issues....wind drift was not huge with 10-15kmph winds drop only a few inches......no need for the heavy bullets unless you want to go farther then 500-600yds.

I am shooting a Savage 12BVSS .22-250 1-12ROT

Understand that your budget of only 1K for gun and optics is not going to get you a "Tack Driver". Quality scopes are more expensive than factory rifles.

For shooting the volume of bullets you will, get a varmint rifle of some sort. 223 or 22-250 would be good.

Brands do not matter. They all shoot the same, but you will find a great deal of brand loyalty on this "precision" forum. Buy what feels comfortable and fits your budget. In time you will figure out all on your own what - if anything - you want to do differently. No serious gun nut is happy with one gun anyway.
