What are my options for a LH 338 Lapua?

I had a browse around, but didn't find any threads as of yet that covered this topic. I have my sites set on a 338 Lapua, and will hopefully be getting one in the very near future if all pans out in the exchange part of the forum, but I am also interested in my options for a left handed rifle chambered in 338 Lapua. Am I limited to having to build one? If so what and how would you recommend going about doing so? Any input is greatly appreciated :D I can't wait to hit the range with a new rifle! :D :sniper:

another option is to buy a RH rifle and stick with that, no?

I'm LH and for benchrest I love RH bolt actions

I currently own/use both, right and left hand guns, and you make a good point, for the most part the majority of my shooting with the 338 would take place at the range off the bench, but just figured it might be wise to get something left handed if i'm investing any amount of money into the gun... but i suppose resale on a left hand 338, custom built to boot would be next to impossible haha

"...with the 338 would take place at the range off the bench..." You may want to re-think that.
Start by looking at the local cost and availablity of ammo and/or brass. Expensive stuff.
Armalite makes their AR-30 left. 12 lbs and 4 FEET long. Contact Wolverine Supplies. $2260Cdn. $85Cdn for a spare mag.
If you opt to have one built, you'll need a long magnum action. Contact Alberta Tactical Rifle Supply. Add the W's. .albertatacticalrifle.com/index.html

buy a rem 700 in 338rum about the same level of performance if you want to play on the range get a muzzle break installed

I guess the only option would be to start with a LH long action and open up the bolt face to Lapua dimensions and install a Badger style extractor.
Some smiths feel its asking for trouble but what do you do?

Magnum length action, not just any long action. Have to be able to feed it not just super-fat but long cases.

By the time you bubba the boltface, install an extractor, open up the feed rails enough to accept a DBM you are within a couple hundred $$ of buying a custom action that is designed for the caliber, and without all the liability issues attached to modifying a Rem bolt and action.

Given the ever increasing number of people who like to make lawyers richer when dumb things they ask to have done go awry, smart gun builders refuse to expose themselves to the liability.

I have done several Rem 700 conversions to 338 Lapua, but purchase the correct bolt from Remington, which makes it less of a liability, but as I state when the mods are all done correctly, the $200.00 is better spent on a custom action . In this case you can not get a 338 Lapua bolt in LH from Remington, so that kinda kills that possibility. The other option would be a PTG bolt, but same drill.

haha 338 woud be alright... but still not a Lapua :D

buy a chrony and a 338 rum and use the change to make ammo .I have had a few lefty rifles built back in the day of little sellection. If you do it enjoy it and don't think of resale you will be lucky to get 25 cents on the dollar for it.

Well said.

If you're still die-hard for a 'lahpooh-ah', touch base with Savage's custom shop, they're supposed to have just an action coming online next year...

get ahold of ellwood epps they already have some actions in stock (the actions are about the same price as a whole gun)any of the stuff ive had built i tore down a whole gun its cheaper .dont like the 338rum buy a weatherby in 338\378. it will still be cheaper than building .What ever you do dont bother with bolt modifiations not worth it .Remember good smiths are like taxedermists it takes a year to do any thing.

Action

Be done with it and buy a Barnard Precision comes with very nice trigger.
A development of the Model P action, the Model PL is of conventional, cylindrical forward-locking turn bolt design, is available in single shot format as either left or right handed configuration. The Model PL has been designed to handle larger bodied cartridges, up to cartridges based on the Rigby .416 brass, such as the .338 Lapua magnum.

I picked up a left handed Stiller tac338. Can't wait to get it in my hands.
If your serious about it, resale should not be a concern. I plan to pass mine down through generations. If the kid turns out to be right handed, they get the advantage us lefties get using a right handed rifle.

I have a Remington MLR on the way, figured I would get that first, and make sure I like the .338 game, and the pricey ammo that goes along with it before I invest too much in building a lefty. Now it'll just be a matter of saving up for the glass to go with it as well haha, and invest in a better muzzle brake and maybe a nice bolt knob.

Are you wanting to move into long range precision shooting? I don't mean competition necessarily but trying to be able to "smack" targets at really far distances on the first round?
