I am asking this question here as I know you guys know your stuff and have tried alot of different combos. The scope is heavy 30mm tube. I had a Near mount arrive that was custom made.. which was completely unsastifactory. WIth this in mind the gun is at the smith right now and I need a new option. Its a hunting gun, so I want something durable, preferably lightweight.

The smith recommended a picatinny rail as the base with Leupy or similar rings. He mentioned a few other choices.

Anybody know a decent combo? The scope is a Schmidt Bender Zenith so its got a bit of weight.

THanks for any help. I put this thread here because its not an optic question as I already have the glass :D

Wide rings, wider the better.

I like Weaver brand stuff, light-weight with two recoil lugs and wide rings. The .270Win is really not much in the recoil department but the scope is heavy and will want to stay stationary during recoil. Wide rings have a lot of surface that is in contact with the scope tube.

how is the quality of weaver these days? the last stuff I bought from them a few years ago..was not what you would call very round. Any other ideas?

for that scope, get good rings.

Talley makes a decent ring, Im a big fan of the vortex precision matched rings, way beefy in person.

I would go with the picatinny rail over the smaller weaver rail as well.

Edit: no experience with the warne's

S&K is as slick as they get.

Conetrol are nice too.

Whats the Warne made out of? Arent the Leupy QRWs made out of steel?

Warnes are made of steel. So are the bases. They are nicer than the QRW/PRW because they don't snap over the tube, and you fully tighten the bottom, then only have two screws to deal with at the top. I also like their trim look.

The Burris XTB tacticool bases are steel picatinny, though the spacing doesn't match a full rail. It does match ordinary Weaver M70 LA and Encore bases!

I'd like to get ahold of the Warne extension bases for the M70.

Start with a new scope that has a 1" tube and finish with a set of Leupold DD's. IMO for a hunting rifle there is none better and I have tried them all.

If you want the best, they're Canadian made . . .

Just google Near Mfg.

no as I am sending back the defective set he made me, that were supposively done to exacting custom standards...that I waited almost a year for... I would suggest that the are in fact not the best. He told me he had done rings for this scope before as well... I guess he hadnt. It didnt fit in three places, the bell touched, it allowed for no for an aft movement for eye relief and it touched in the rear as well. 3 issues isnt that good.

His solution was get another scope. Yeah I will ditch an almost $3K scope for your $400 dollar mount. Apparently according to him its just me with this problem. I have the gun at a very reputable gunsmith so I will get something else.

I am pissed off about this alot. I liked his mount, wanted it to work...but it just doesnt. I wont even get into the "wait" for the mount, ironic considering he quoted me no more than 6 weeks when I bought it.

Sorry boomer...we are going to have to disagree here.
