What are the rules for a 10 year old and clay games?

My step son is ten but he’s a small kid. I had I’m out shooting some skeet last year with a cut down single shot .410 and he liked it. I bought a mossberg youth pump with two barrels and a lop stock piece. It was too heavy for him last year but I’m going to see if he can swing it this year. I have everything I need to load 3/4oz 20g loads for him when he’s ready. Lots of time since he can’t shoot registered until he’s 13 anyways.

Great to hear. I live in a small city in the country, and we have very few young shooters showing up to try trap and skeet. I even set up a junior introduction program last spring , where our club was going to supply youth sized guns, ammunition and clays for a four day program at a greatly reduced cost, and we had to cancel because only two young shooters signed up.

Maybe better advertising might help, just a thought. Four days programs are hard for busy families to commit to as well. At any rate I wouldn't give up yet, our club has been running a juniors program on a Tuesday night trap league for a few years now and we had over 30 juniors last summer. We supply targets and ammo but not guns. We also have a couple of donors that help out with some funding but that often goes into safety glasses and shooting vests for the kids. It's been a very successful program and very worth while. We're located an hour away from a good sized city but over half of the kids are local farm kids.

We posted the program on our club site, we sent e-mails to all members, and local businesses were made away of the program, so they could also promote the program, as recruiting new shooters would increase their business. Due to our range location, we are very restricted as to when we can operate our range, so we worked out additional time for the youth program, so that the youths would be shooting on their own, with a couple of adults supervising. The response was so poor, that we aren't going to bother trying again. On the positive side, for some reason, we have gained several new skeet shooters in the past few months, more new shooters than we have gained in the previous couple of years, and most are younger shooters.

I'm just wondering what target ammo are your kids using. My 10 years old twins have Mosberg 510 20ga and standard Winchester X target ammo is kinda hot for them. Does anyone know reliable source of Winchester AA 20ga or Fiocchi low recoil 20ga?

Did you try the schools? Or where kids go?
Mossleigh runs a pretty popular junior program on trap night, guns and ammo are supplied no charge.
Fernie runs similar with rimfire and there is interest in trap too.

It does not depend on club rules.
By federal regulation he must be under direct arms length control. He is an unlicensed person in control of a firearm, and thus needing direct supervision by a licensed person.
CFO, in doing range inspections in Saskatchewan, has been emphasizing the need for direct control of unlicensed persons.

For the league shoots at our club the squads of juniors are supervised by a range officer.

At the Mossleigh league last year I think there were at least 4 squads of Juniors. I am not sure of the age of the youngest but they were all supervised by qualified range officers.

As long as we are talking about Juniors and clay shooting.

Shotshell Sporting Clays and the CNSCA and NSCA are holding a Youth Development Clinic during the May long weekend in Valleyview, Alberta. NSCA certified instructors will on hand to instruct youth shooters on all aspects of clay shooting from basic safety and PPE to chokes and gun fit.

Details available at Shotshell website. Registration at the CNSCA or Winscoreonline website.
