Hey guys,

Looks like it may come to work out that I might move 5-10 minutes out of the city (Winnipeg) at some time in my life. This brought the idea to myself that - damn it would be nice to be able to fire restricted firearms on my land if I have enough room.

But, as the law goes you cannot fire restricted firearms outside of a shooting range. So well, what exactly qualifies a place as an official gun range? Backstops of course, but - what else? I'm assuming i'd need some sort of official title/club/ and what not. Anyone know what the official rules/regulations are on this?

Thanks

Start by doing some background with the local by-laws. If the area you're looking at has an anti-discharge by-law, you may be hooped.

Beyond that, sit down and ask yourself what type of shooting you will want to do. The backstop and berm requirements are varied, depending on the range and type of shooting.

Contact your provicial CFO, and they will help. (try not to laugh)

Most provincal CFO's follow the federally mandated regulations. Just how closely depends on your CFO. In Ontario & Quebec, we must follow them to the letter and then some. For instance, in Ontario the club has to be non-profit corporation with a list of directors, letters patent etc. etc. etc. filed with the Ministry of Consumer and Business Services.
Here's a link to the 160 page range design and construction guide, you can print out and read when you have trouble sleeping.

Thanks for the info guys, what a huge PDF file LOL. I'll flip through the parts that apply to what I would want to be doing. (Pretty much long rifles/handguns - Just single target shooting, nothing special)
