What are thoughts on a Rem 40XBR?

Hi all,

Thinking of getting into long range precision shooting. Have shot .22 target a long time but now want to try and reach out a little further. Local range is only 200m, and I have some property that I can occasionally play on out to 500m.
Question is a local shop has an old(er) Remington 40XBR coming up on auction. .308, 12x Leupold scope and what looks like a 20" stainless target/bull barrel. Have not seen a whole lot about this model here (might be telling me something right there) but what is the value of these rifles? Any ideas as to what one in good to very good condition should go for? What can I expect (if I do my part) on accuracy? Basically, is it a good starter rifle for long range centerfire?

Thanks in advance,

Mike

One of our local shooters has a few F-Class rigs built on the XBR action. Needless to say, he is pretty much untouchable in local comp's. I would guess it will cost anywhere from $1200-$2000 depending on the work done to it, barrel/throat condition, aftermarket parts added (BR trigger, scope rail, etc...).

Maynard has a 40X for sale, Kreiger barle with an Obermeyer match chmaber IIRC.
Give him a PM.
This one is an accurate rifle....

Assuming the rifle shoots accurately and it still has some life left in the barrel, it is a good foundation for the right price.

It'll thump a bit in 308, but you would have an action that can be easily converted to any short-action caliber with a .308 bolt face, such as a 6BR or 6.5.*

re:

Thanks to all that answered! THe rifle has been removed from the auction (Yes it was the Paris auction by Landsborough) so it is all a moot point question. If another were to show up, I guess I would take a look at it based on what I've heard.

Thanks for your honesty!

Funny how they own a store now and things just get "dropped" from the auction list.

re:

having met the guy selling and his friend you be the judge...

seller, no PAL or FAC:confused:, brought the friend to "help" negotiate, loud arguments between the two 'friends':slap: constantly changing guns to sell and values wanted for them...boy I don't think I would want to deal with them either...

Karl Granlund at Granlund Firearms in Campbell River B.C. has two 40xb's for sale at 1500.00 each. One is a .223 and the other is a .220 swift. His phone number is 604-286-9996. He keeps weird hours so keep trying it you don't get an answer. Kevin.
