I'm slowly getting what I need together so that I can start going the distance and am looking for an app to get me on paper. I have an Ipod touch on its way, but what app should I fork out the money for? Not that they're super expensive or anything...

A quick itunes store search gives me a pretty good list:

Ballistic: Field Tactical Edition $9.99
Ballistic $6.99
Let Fly Ballistic Calculator $0.99
Bullet Flight $29.99
iSnipe $4.99
BulletFlt L2 $11.99
Mil-Dot $1.99
BulletFlt L1 $3.99

Which app are you running? pros? cons? thanks.

I run Exbal, but it is on a Windows Mobile device. For the price you can pick up one of these on the internet, let me tell you the program is well worth the 85 CAN it costs. I have tryed many other palm and net programs but Exbal takes the cake IT JUST ROCKS. Just remember a simple rule with calculators. Junk in Junk out. The solution is only as good as the information inputed.

I purchased an Ipod touch for the purpose of running Bullet Flight. I have used at least 4 different PC versions of ballistic software, this is as good as any of them.

Hard to imagine a better handheld ballistic calculator.

IMHO

Holy COW - Bullet Flight went up to $30???? I bought it when it was $11.99, and I thought that was pricey!
EDIT: I found out the 'military' version is 29.99. The 11.99 (L2) is good enough for your needs (likely). The only benefits of the M version are the ability to calculate 'actual' BC and spin drift/coriolis effect. Which is odd, because my 'L2' app (the only one available when I bought it) does that already.

However, it is worth every penny. Very user friendly, and has everything you'd possibly need. You can download current conditions based on location (altitude, temp, humidity, air pressure, etc.) with the push of a button. Check this out:

It's really sweet, and I found quite accurate (well, out to my 500-600 yard experience). Trust me - you'll never use anything else after trying it.

X3 on Bullet flight. AMAZING! I just bought it last week. I took a new 300 wsm to 1000yd range (1045yds), punched in my 210VLD data and first shot was @ 2 o'clock in the 5 ring. WOW. This was my first shot at that range for about 5 years and first shot at that range for this gun. I didn't even verify the 28 MOA elevation adjustment @ 100 yds. Just clicked up from 100 yd zero and voila!-very cool.

Good thread.
I'm planning on getting an Iphone as well in the near future and was wondering which ballistics program to get. Thinking I might get the level and compass programs as well :D.

I'm downloading it off of eMule right now. Just so you guys know, it's free off the net.

Ballistic: Field Tactical Edition is quite compatible to BulletFlt although is has ALL of the ballistics info already available, whereas BulletFlt you would need to track down that info separately and add it in yourself. The built in inclometer of BulletFlt is pretty cool, but you don't have your iPod Touch/iPod mounted to the side of your rifle it is of no use (but cool never the less!)

Also new HUD display of the Ballistic: Field Tactical Edition is VERY similar to what BulletFlt offers although BulletFlt does offer the Simple and Complex HUD

I have the ballistic fte version and like it alot. There are alot of factory rounds in there as well as you can add in your home brew rounds. I have only used it to 300m but after adjusting my come ups to what it recommended I hit the gong with 3 of my rifles. You can add in weather/wind changes too. Well worth the 10 bucks I think.

Here is the HUD Comparision between Ballistic FTE and BulletFlt

Ballistic FTE and BulletFlt are showing slightly different results. Can you tell us which one is more accurate?

Does BulletFlt get wind, pressure and other data using the iPhone's GPS connection?

I'm also considering getting a ballistic calc. for my iPhone.

If you are referring to to the Screen shots I posted - that because there have different bullet data selected - I just wanted to show the differences between the two in respect to their displays. I have not put any .308 win ballistic data into BulletFlt so I can't do a side-by-side comparison.

As for accuracy, I would image theire us the the same or very similar ballistics algorithms and data here is a good reference site for this type of info - www .zdziarski.com/projects/libballistics/

In addition here is a good collection of software that is available - www .eskimo.com/~jbm/software/software.html

which one of these programs allows you to input density altitude.... much simpler

I think both collect atmospheric information thought a web service in conjunction to your current GPS location - so all you have to do is click the button and the app does the rest, so if you have an iPod touch you will need a valid Wi-Fi connection whereas the iPhone will collect the info via the 3G network.

I think I'm gonna give Ballistic: FTE a shot, its more just to get me on paper to get some dope down on cards so it'll probably be more than I need. I'm planning on running it on a touch so I'll probably load atmospheric data before I leave home as there is no Wi-Fi where I shoot.
