Well, I finally have a bit of time back on my hands, so my .338 build is finally getting taken off the back burner.

I have a Remington 700 Police chambered in .338 Lapua Magnum, and I have a Sightron SIII Fixed 20X42mm with a 30mm tube.

What base and rings would you reccomend for a rifle such as this?

Main shooting distance will be from 100-300 meters,

I plan to put a lot of rounds through this rifle, so the parts have to be very durable.

The threads for the base are #8 thread, so that probably narrows the search down some as well.

I prefer the nightforce base as it has an integral recoil lug, and is lower than any other I have found. This allows for a better range of scope height adjustment. I find that with rails, it can sometimes be hard to get the scope low enough.

Use a 0 MOA base for 300 meters. The scope has 150moa of elevation, which means you still have 75moa available from 100 yards and out. You can still use the scope out past 1K with the 0 MOA base. I would recommend a Near base.

Isn't it a waste of barrel to limit this rifle at only 300 meters?

100-300 meters is all that is locally available to me. I wish I had more time to drive out to ORA meetings, but my free time has a funny habbit of getting filled. :p

Thanks for the advice. I will take a good look at the near bases.

Nightforce rail, bites down nicely on the Rem 700. I had to go with Kyle rings, as Nightforce has done away with their super low rings. Will buy good used ones if out there. .085 or something like that. PM if you have any for sale. There is some frt to back play with this NF/K combo, but lock down pushed forward, good to go. I have 6 700 heavy barrel target shooters that share the same scope.

Farrell base and rings - I will be sending you some #8 bolts shortly.

Burris XTB base and Sig Zee rings. XTR rings work great too.

Leupold PRW's rings and Mk4 bases - these should be set up for the #8 bolts.

You have some good recomendations above but whatever you get, make sure it's a one piece base and glue it to the reciever with JB weld. This will help counteract any banana bending of the reciever, not to mention keep things from finding thier way loose.

You really should JB weld the scope to the rings too, but on that you would use Johnson floor wax as a release agent. Put the scope ring on the base and tighten as you would. When bedding the scope, just rub the scope with Johnson paste wax, then put epoxy on the lower scope ring, set the scope in place, epoxy the upper scope ring, put on and tighten only finger tight. (until the glue sets) Dont forget to make sure the scope is level and wipe off any excess.

After the glue sets, tighten the scope ring screws. This way you dont need to lap the rings and no chance you will bend the scope.

This is rock solid until you need to rebarrel.

A little heat will soften the epoxy to take it apart if you need to later.

We manufacture a 1 piece stainless steel picatinny rail specifically for this rifle. It is black to match the color of your rifle. Has 20 MOA built in, a set of NF rings (medium) and you are set.
