What bear defense gun?

I recall a thread...A long, long time ago..

I think it was on HuntAmerica, so todbartell, JohnYCanuck and a coupdl of others may remmeber it....

This fellow from somewher ein the lower 48 had booked an Alaskan Guided Hunting trip, and he said that there woul be bears in the area (duh)

He was taking his *new* 338 Winchester Magnum with (at the time) State of the art Trophy Bonded Bear Claws to hutn with. (Sounds good)

He went on to state that they woudl be sleeping in tents, so he woudl be taking his 44 Magnum revolver for nighttime defense (not a bad idea)

Then he went on to ask "Woudl it be a good idea to pack along a defender shotgun for close range bear defense?"

i think the bear could shoot the shotty easier than a 44 mag. better chance of hits with buchshot than single progectile too.

Serious Bear Defense Question

It was top ranked last year. How about this year?

What would you use against this defense? Shotgun formation? (Shotgun formation is mentioned only to establish a connection, albeit tenuous, to hunting and sporting arms to prevent the post from being moved to off topic);) :D
 
I had a revelation about this thread, as I was driving home tonight...

I got the story WRONG!:eek:

I remembered it fully now...

The guy wasn't goin to Alaska, he was goin to New Zealand!:eek:

After a few guys posted stuff liek "Who is goign to walk around with a tht hardware, anyway?" SOmeone chimed in "DO they even allow handguns in NZ?"

He checked the website,a nd sure enough- no handguns, which concerned him greatly.

FInally someone clued in a bit more "Do they even HAVE bears in NZ???"

HE responded, I didn't think they did, but the guide insisted that we woudl see some, and they would be nearby camp.

A furious debate ensued, peopel took sides, some said that NZ had no bears, others took the side of the guide and said if the guide is tellign you there are bears, then there are bears!!

FInally I called up one of the Kiwi guys at work and asked him.

He said "#### man, we got no bears, the guide probably said BOARS! We got heaps of pigs!"

I think I posted this info. Maybe not...:rolleyes: :cool:

I'd vote for a Colt Woodsman, a gallon bottle of Dettol and at least one change of underwear. Can we move on now?
