What brand of competition seating dies should I get for a 308 Winchester?

I see good comments on the Redding but the RCBS has a side window for bullet inserting that seems to me to be more advanced and better.

What do you think? They are a lot of money for just a seating die so I would appreciate your input. :D

Do all the brands require a special shell holder thus preventing use on a progressive press? Ya, ya... I am just curious. ;)

Thanks,

Fudd

I have the RCBS Comp seating dies for all my rifle calibers, I think the window feature is great, especially for the small calibers, never had a single case of crumpled neck in thousands of rounds, even the 22 hornet which can be a PITA. Highly reccomend them, worth every penny.

Redding all the way.
Type S Match Set.
I bought the Comp Die Set my first time around but find there is no need for the micrometer adjustable neck sizer since I size my necks from mout to shoulder.

Basically any seater that fully supports the case will do the job. By fully supports, I mean it has a sleeve that basically has a chamber cut into it and supports the case body and not just the neck/shoulder. Redding and Foster are good quality seaters. Have never used an RCBS and only used the Wilson seater that works in an arbor press.

You don't need a special shell plate per say. However, make sure that the case alignment sleeve is being supported by the case shoulder and not the shell plate or you will loose any benifits of the seater and might as well be using a standard seating die. I had to trim the sleeve about 0.025" to get it to work properly in my Dillon 550. Others I know have not had to do that.

I have the RCBS gold for my .308 and really like it, the window is a nice option. I just bought a set of Forster for the 6mmbr I am getting built so will have to compair them.

Lee neck sizer. No lube needed for neck sizing.
Redding full length resizer when the time comes, that you have to full length resize.
Redding type S bullet seater.
I full length resize the brass the first time reloading. Fire form to my chamber. neck size for next 5 firings, full length resize, anneal neck & shoulders. good to go for another 5 firings. repeat. Some people get 30 reloads out of brass using this method.
If you asked 100 shooters what they did, you would get 100 variations of reloading. This is my way!

I use Hornady seaters with custom sleeves and seating punches if I'm using a conventional press. Otherwise, I go with Wilson. Regards, Bill.

I use a Forster micrometer seater, it's good to go.

I'm thinking of buying one of these, can you tell me more about your experience with it? I'm working up a load and hope to be playing with seating depths soon: how accurate and consistent are they?
On a related note, I hear that Hornady is coming out with a seating stem especially for Amax bullets, does anyone know if these would work well with the Forster?
