What brand of target load for 28ga provides the best hull for reloading. I havent bought shells for the 28 or reloaded it in a while and just wondering if there is some new and wonderfull hulls out there.

And whats your recipe for the hull you suggest.

"I'm reloading on a MEC 600JR"

Winchester AAHS is the best hull.

My load is 13 grains of Unique, WW209 primer and Claybuster 5034-28HS wad.

I avoid Federal GM hulls due to hull separation problems I've had with them. The Cheddite hullls (Challenger and Kent) can be reloaded however they are much longer and don't crimp as consistently as the Winchester.

CB, how would you compare the AAHS with the old style AA hull (28ga)?

Most people I've talked with, who had previously used the old style hull haven't really been happy with the HS.

Brad.

My favorite hull to reload for 28 ga is the Rem Premier STS hull. Only down side with them apparently is that their life span is not as long as the Win HS hulls. I've yet to find that out for myself first hand though. But for loadability I love it and wish I had an unlimited supply of them. They load beautifully for me in my PW 800B loader. Once I'm out of them....I'll be switching to by stash of the HS hulls.

I'm just at the end of my supply of the old AA compression formed hulls.......so that's why I'm now into the Rem hulls. I'm just using up everything else I have on hand before getting into my supply of HS hulls.

I'm loading slightly less than 13 grains of Alliant's 20/28 powder (12.6 - 12.7 grains)...cheddite primer....Rem PT28 wad.

I was using Unique powder but decided to try the 20/28 because of all the favorable reports I'd been hearing about it. It's a bit pricier....but I do like it alot. I'm using it exclusively in the 28 ga load and using my Unique now exclusively for my 20 ga.

Using my Rem PT28 wads right now because I have them on hand....but they're pricey so it's doubtful I'll continue to use them and likely switch to the Claybuster wad when I'm out of the rem hulls and rem wads.

When all is said and done and everything else I have on hand is gone.....my 28 ga load of choice is going to become:

Win HS hull
20/28 powder
Cheddite primer
Claybuster HS wad

I choose to use NOTHING but premium hulls...Win and Rem with the brass heads. If it's not brass I won't touch it. Cheap hulls are often too much of a PITA expanding and sticking in my tubes.

Kinda odd huh Brad? Most people I talk with all love the HS hulls...primarily because of their longevity.

I have to see what kind of mileage I get out of my Rem STS hulls. If I'm happy with it.....I just may go back to them when I have no more HS hulls to load....and have to buy something to replenish my stock.

IF....I can get satisfactory mileage out of the Rems.....then they will once again become my hull of choice. "fingers crossed" because I really like loading them.

Most reports I've heard have been varying from 10 -15 reloads for the HS hull.

Yet to confirm that for myself though. Don't know if there's a little embellishment going on there or not.

Brad, no matter which gauge I prefer the older style one-piece AA.

The 28 suffered a bad start however because in early lots the hulls were slightly shorter than the old style and the thicker base meant the standard AA wad didn't always work as well. With the revised longer AAHS hulls and the specific wads made by Winchester and Claybuster I find them about the same.

More info on the hull length can be found in these threads from Shotgun World.

As far as longevity is concerned I'm getting between 6 and 8 reloads per hull but tend to toss them before they start showing splits or bad crimps.

Note to gth, I use a MEC Jr. too and have found that when you reach the crimp starter station it helps to position one of the creases in the top of the hull directly towards you. This helps ensure a proper crimp.

Most of my 28 gauge reloading has been done with the older Winchester ,Challenger ,Federal,Remington and Imperial hulls.Have only reloaded one box of the new Winchester hulls. From most reports I have read the new Winchester are the best for reloading.

AA -HS hulls are too easy to buckle in the middle when crimping. And are wad fussy.

Remington STS is my favorite hull to load and for longevity.

Not much could replace the old style AA. Another hull that I will never say no to obtaining is the Federal hull.

Rem. STS hull , 13 grs. Unique and a claybuster wad and Cheddite primer = Smashed skeet targets for me.

mwmham.... if you want to load a lot of Challenger / Kent/ Cheddite I would suggest you order the proper wads from Ballistic Products for those hulls.
Also buy the loading data brochure. Will Bilzir in Alberta is their Canadian dist. and is a gentleman to deal with.
