I use a patched round ball in my 50 cal caplock as well as in the 54 flinter taking both deer and moose with no problems out to 100 yards.

530 grain flat nose .45 cal lead bullet. 120-150 grains of FFF goex kicks less than a 45-70 more than enough for a deer or moose, also for thwacking a gong at 200 yds (shooting out of a Rigby sporting rifle i built myself)

I just use a ball and patch in my .54 cal hawkin. I cast my own balls while playing with mine by the camp fire..
