Hey all.

Seems like I am gonna rush a purchase on a Winchester 70 Stealth II.

My question is what cal to buy in?

I have a 308 in a Savage.

So, the options are:
223WSSM
243WSSM
25WSSM
22-250

I'm not sure what to think about the WSSMs. This is gonna be a paper puncher. Good grouping sizes, etc.

I bought one in 223 WSSM from Tackle Shack there in GP. It's ok so far. Not a paper puncher, but I didn't buy it for that. I haven't started handloading for it yet either. I like it though.

Personally, I would definately stay away from the SSM's. They are not what they are cracked up to be. It was just a gamble on the short/fat is better. Anybody that I knew that bought one no longer owns a SSM. The bolt face is quite a bit different than the standard or magnum faces. You would pretty much have to stick with a SSM if you plan on rebarreling to another caliber or, work the boltface or get a new bolt. Go with the 22-250. With the 308 bolt face you have a lot more options out there. The 22-250 may be boring to some but it has been around a long time. We also do not know what is going to be the final outcome of Winchester. Is it totally dead or will it be resurected?

My wife has a Stealth II in .308 and she loves that newly re-designed stock. It's got a skinnier pistol grip for her small/med sized hands. The recoil pad is so soft and mushy to accept the recoil of the .308 shooting 155 gr. AMAX's coming out at 2800 fps.

You cannot go wrong with the StealthII. I call it a poor man's FN SPR. LOL

Cheers and happy shopping. Let us know what you decide on.

i wish i would have bought 5 now that they are going over see's....my 308 is amazing out of the box. rem corlock 180grs hit 3/8ths to 1/2 all day long.....next is a Robertson stock for my baby....

Swampy: My wife's Stealth II is a CRPF (Controlled round push feed), so does that make it a pre-64 ? Not quite... but close enough for the girls we go out with. LOL

My previous Stealth in .308 was a blackened HVY Varmint (around 1994, I owned one) and that was a push feed. The push feed worked fine for my competitive uses.

Go for it !
