What Caliber Can I Rebarrel My Remington 6.8 Police Without Breaking The Bank?

It has a 26" fluted barrel and is new in the box.
I did attempt to sell this gun, but talked to a few members about changing it to a different caliber.
The size of base of the 6.8 is between 308 and 223.
I would have to purchase a bolt and barrel to convert it to another caliber.

Being a short action you should be able to chamber it for a 270 WSM...though, sometimes the cost makes it unrealistic to do so.
You might be best off to just take a loss when selling it and then buy what ever you want.

Just have the bolt face opened up to accommodate .308 family of cartridges and re-chamber to .277-08 or whatever whatever variation of you prefer. Might need a new mag follower.
Lots of good high BC bullets out for .277 now.

At this point you could probably just spin on a new barrel in your chambering of choice and have whatever caliber you really want.

6.8 SPC is an interesting cartridge but it's an odd-ball choice for a bolt gun, hence the reason you can't sell it. I've seen it on the EE before and was at one point tempted to contact you about it.

Your bolt might be able to accomodate 7.62x39mm based cartridges without modification, if my recollection of memory is accurate. Nothing wrong with a 6PPC or 7.62x39mm bolt gun depending on what your intended purpose is.

I had the same Rifle, got it at discount price of $680, I will be Ripping that barrel action apart, use the 6.8SPC barrel to ream out to a 270win, and put it on my rem700 Long action, opening up the bolt face to 308 with that action and put in a heavy 308 barrel.

Let me know how much you wanted for the Bolt(6.8SPC)?

Your suggestions will help with some reasonable options.
If I can get the bolt face opened up, I could just install one of my heavy Remington 7-08 or 243 barrels.
I have a new Remington 700 5R in 308, a very lite BDL in 7-08, and a Remington Police in 223.

308 or 7-08 would be find, you might be able to use your old.extractor or use a 308extractor but if you make a 223 bolt face, there is some amount of work need to be done with insert, you need to install ar 15 or sako extractor to make it work, same with open upto magnum bolt face!

The gentleman that I traded with to get the 6.8 showed up on Saturday, and he wanted it back. He traded a number of guns for it, I couldn't refuse the deal as he laid out some nice items for trade.
