What Caliber For The Wife?

Just to be a pain in the ass....

My girlfriend is less picky about calibre and more picky about the gun itself. Her favorite gun is one of my Kimber's in 40SW. For her, it is the single stack grip (with Hogues) that makes the gun easy to shoot. She doesn't mind the XD9 but that Kimber is still her fav. She likes my STI in 40 (again, that one is a single stack) and my compact Kimber (although that one doesnt have Hogues) over glocks, berettas, and so on. Now, if I had a single stack 9mm 1911... that MIGHT become her new favorite.

Basically, I would find a gun first and then pick the best calibre before settling on a calibre and then picking a gun. If it is easier for my g/f to shoot a full power 40SW or 45ACP out of a single stack 1911 versus a 9mm out of a Glock, Sig, or Beretta, that should say something.... Of course, YMMV cause my g/f is a bit nuts sometimes ;-)

My wife loves the Springfield Armory .45 with the Ciener .22 LR conversion kit for working on her technique. Then I bought an IMBEL (read: Springfield Armory) 9mm M973 for her. She loves the single stack M1911. I've got a load of 115 Frontier copper plated bullets with 5.0 gr. IMR 4756 for her. We chrono'ed this load to just a little over 1000 fps.... more like 1030 fps average. Nice and mild and she is just tickled with this handgun.

I've since sold the Pachmyer Signature wraparound grips.... kinda fat for her hand. Then I ordered a pair of panels... Pearce Thin Grips from Brownells. She liked them when they were on my Springfield Loaded .45, and she wanted a pair for her 9mm. So now we have kinda matching Brazilian M1911's....

By the way, we only shoot the .45 when I compete. The rest of the time, the .45 slide / barrel is put away while the Ciener .22 LR kit gets all of the practice for all of us.

Hope this helps,
Barney

I'd also recomend a 'K' or 'L' frame Smith or a Ruger GP100 slightly larger hands.
If she learns to shoot a DA revolver accuratly, everything else will seem easier.

For small hands, S&W Model 10 , Cheifs Special, Colt Police. I bought my wife a Colt Detective Special, 38Spl, 6 shot with a steel frame, I also added a set of rubber Pacmyers to dampen any excess recoil, and she loves it. But if 12(6) is a problem, then a 4.25" barrel for sure.

Merry Christmas
Bill

My wife started with my SW 2206 then moved up to a BHP and could centerpunch a target at 7yd with a .45 ACP 1911. She stands 5' tall and weighs about 90 lbs. Rent or try a bunch and pick the one she does best with.

Myself I love 1911's and I'm having some 9mm CCO's built as I love the 9mm even though I can shoot .45 ok too.
