What caliber should I buy next?

Hi CGN,
I currently have rifles chambered in 17 HMR, 22LR, 22WMR, 204R, 223, 270, 303, 308, 30-06, and 300WM. I'm selling the 300WM as I don't have a use for it(can't get enough moose hunters together to get a tag).

So I'm wondering what interesting caliber you would get to fill in any gaps in my cabinet that are smaller than 30-06.

I was looking at 25-06 but when I looked at the bullet compared to the 270 it looks very similar.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Yup a 6.5x55 or 260 rem.
6.5x55 if you want a classic that has lots of potential in a modern action. 260 if you want to be able to just run a expander die into a 243 case.
Or a 7x57 like a Brno 21.
 
you have the smaller rounds covered. how about some thing larger. 35 whelen or 338 06. both nice to shoot good for deer and bear and big enough for moose. an all round medium bore.
 
6.5x55 or .44 mag... Or 45-70 if you reload. How about a 12 gauge?

You are doing pretty well there, I have a few .22's, 17 hmr, .223, 6.5x55, .308, 45-70, a few shotguns, 9mm and .357 mag. At work I have 9mm, .44 mag and 30-06.

It adds up quickly eh?
 
The way I read it, you are looking for a low recoiling "shooter" rifle and you have no need of a high energy cartridge. If this is correct, then the gap in your line up, for a rifle of smaller bore and less energy than your .30/06, is clearly between the .223 and the .270... which could be anything from the 6mm/.257 bore/6.5mm groups.

A common choice and perhaps most practical would be a .243 Winchester. Hardly "interesting" however... a 6mm Rem would up the unique angle slightly, a 6mm-284 would up it even more.

In the quarter bores... a .257 Weatherby is a peppy choice, but since you have already rejected the .25/06, I would be more inclined to recommend a .257 Roberts or maybe a .250/3000 Savage... both are kool and eminently practical.

In the 6.5mm grouping, the kool kidz are shooting 6.5X57 or 6.5-284... but almost as cool and far more practical is the 6.5X55... if history doesn't impress you much, the "new kidz on the block," the .260 Rem or 6.5 Creedmoor might be your ticket.

Truthfully, any of these mentioned are fine cartridges... take your pick.
 
Will give you my honest opinion, and am going through this myself..... Which is resulting in a half empty safe...... What cal do you WANT?..... What do you envision your final collection looking like..... What will it take you to get to the point where you buy a cal just because?......
 
You NEED a 340 Weatherby.....................but you said smaller than the '06, how about the new 6.5X300 Wby.........

Hey SB..........I envision my final collection stretching off in the racks into the mists and lost in the haze in the distance............But in reality I know all I really NEED is a 340 Wby.........
