I am trying to figure out what caliber I want to buy or build to fill the gap.
I have the following.
375 H&H sako kodiak
338 ultra mag custom build long range moose and elk rig

308 sako finnlight- mountain gun
243 custom RMR rifle- long range yote gun

let me know what you think. I am thinking maybe a 7 mm rem

It seems to me that there is more of a gap between the .243 and the .308, than there is between the .308 and the 338 Win Mag. Now if you need a justification for a new toy, that is a different story.

As far as that other gap goes, may I suggest a 6.5X55 SE.

Without knowing your full game/hunting situation it's kinda hard to tell. Based on your current fleet you have a bunch of all-weather style stuff already, two real heavy hitters and something lighter. I'd go for something "prettier", maybe a nice wood/blued gun. 7mm Rem is never a bad choice but it's a good opportunity to try something a bit different, maybe a .280 if your a reloader? Nothing wrong with a 6.5x55mm or .257 Roberts either. There's lots of neat "in-betweeners" that would do quite nicely with less recoil that your big boomers.

I'd plunk a .270 or a .270 WSM between the .243 and the .308 and then wedge a .350 Rem. Mag. or a .35 Whelen between the .338 and the .375. I suppose you could put a .30-06 in the middle too if you wanted to round things out perfectly. Of course, you will need to trade the antiquated H&H for the new Elvis :)

new caliber

You have nice colection of quality rifles, and i am sure they all can shoot quite well. but whgy not build yourself a custom rifle that will outshoot the factory guns you have, and if you go with what I built it will be quite inexpensive to shoot 223 rem, or you could go with 22/250 fast twist and the 260rem would be a good choice.
PM me if you want any info on a custom build,

My opinion anyways. :D

A nice 223 or 204 would help fill out the lower end. If you want something bigger I agree that the gap between the 243 and the 308 is best to fill. You obviously like the 308 based cartridges so a 260 would be really good. I love the 7mm-08 cartridge, but if you have a 308 I see no apparent need for it. In general I would look for something with a higher velocity than the 308 in a calibre between .257 to 7mm. Come to think of it a 25-06 would fit the bill quite nicely, or a 270.
Basically you already own a good spectrum to take any game you need to, so I would base it on very specific hunting purposes or types of guns that you like. A lever gun in 45/70 would be a great big bore. Or a lever 44 magnum would be a fun plinker. A nice ruger #1 in an interesting cartridge that you desire is always something that most owners cherish as well. So if you don't decide on a specific cartridge chambering that you must have, get a gun that intrigues you. Not everything has to be practical ;)
