Hey guys,
I've got a Remington model 700 in .243 Win. (heavy varmint barrel) bedded in a great stock made by Robertsons Composites. Shot it out as far as 900m & shoots ok. I need to get the action trued & was thinking of changing the stock barrel on at the same time.
Not sure if I want to go with the heavier recoil of the .30 cal. or a 6.5mm. I want something that will last a whole season too. Not convinced that the 6.5 x 47 Lapua will deliver small groops at 900m & the 6.5 x 284 seems to be a barrel burner.
Would appreciate some feedback.

Hi Berny
I took my heavy barrel 243 and turned it into a 6BR for F-Open and it is one of the most popular calibers in F-class today. There and many others to chose from but the 6 Br is very easy to reload for.
Cheers

Hi Berny; The 6BR tough to beat out to 600 yards and is very competative out to 1000 if conditions are good. If you want to kick ass beyond 600 then you should suck it up with that recoil thing and go to the 6.5-284 or the .284 Win. Many other calibers are competative but these three are the front runners.

Regards

Aubrey

Just crack on a good 30" barrel in .308,for me F-open is dieing way more shooters in FTR= more prize money
way less expensive to shoot the .308 than the big 7mm etc,
Lapua brass $75 .308, to over $100 for 6.5by 47 Lapua
Bullets cheaper
Better still sell your action and get a 700 with small bolt face for 223
No recoil, your wife can shoot it, don,t be fooled 223 won the Nationals last year and two years before, lost to a .308 Eastern F class by 1 point, won the Longrange chalange 2010 and scores often better at the shorts than many open guns
good luck what ever you choose Berny looking forward to seeing you at range.

I've got a feeling I know you Manitou. At Connaught? Does lane # 62 at the eastern championships ring a bell? Or Robertson's?
You're right, the .223 is less expensive & less taxing on the shoulder too.
Food for thought.
Thanks,

Berny

If you want to try F-Open the 6BR is a great all around caliber and sonic past 900 meters. I just built another 6BR for up to 600yds. I prefer the bigger 6.5's at longs, but if the wind is calm I'll use the 6BR anytime.
Don't let Manitou fool you. He could easily win with a 6BR if he wanted too and beat his .223 scores. F-Open dying? Not as long as I'm still around. Can't wait to try out my new Co-Axial rest top. ;)

BTW, just got the new "Blue Box" reamer from PTG and new Lapua brass and fired a few test rounds. It's a perfect fit and no pressure signs with 30.0grs of Varget and mollied 105grs. Soon as I get some good weather I'll do a 5 shot group test.

Thanks "lejarretnoir",
Who's BTW ...?
From what I saw, Manitou shoots preatty damn good with his 223 & has won a few I believe.
Your right tough, "Open" can only grow as long as people keep shooting for sport.
The 6's are just as good to buck the wind as the 6.5's, not a big difference. I guess my choice will boil down to availlability but mostly cost.

Berny,

I shoot my 6BR out to 1000yds in competition on a regular basis and keep up with the 6.5's and 284's

If your so inclined, the 260 Rem is a great all around cartridge with the 139-142gr offerings.
