What can be hunted with 9mm Luger?

Now that I have a non-restricted carbine I wonder what game can I use it on and with what kind of ammo?

rabbits. coyote's at closer range... anything under the size of a deer. id check your effective range with it.

147 grain bullet, about half the speed of a 30-30.
Not a great hunting round for anything as big as deer, it would work on coyote, if you can get close enough to make an effective hit.

I am quite sure it would kill deer if used at very close quarters and shot placement was right. Hell deer have been killed with .22 rimfires. Is it an adequate cartridge ...not in my opinion.

Even for rabbits I would probably defer to the .22 rimfire over a 9mm.

I am afraid 9mm would leave shreds of a rabbit, unless it's 90gr over a very small subsonic load.

Never done it myself but know of it happening. My grandfather even killed a adult cow moose with a 25-20 which is not much more than a .22 RF.


We used .22 RF to kill steers and pigs at butchering time. For pigs Dad used .22 shorts. A local processor had his .22 stolen from his slaughter house and tried a .22 mag but found it drove the bullets through head and neck and into the front of the loin so was happy to get an old Cooey from me.

A 22LR to the cranium of a large, thick skulled pig drops them dead, but I wouldn't want to count on the kind of accuracy you get when you can walk right up to a hog.

Are you nuts? I wouldn't use a 9mm on a chickadee. Do have any idea how vicious a wounded chickadee can be? Not on my watch buddy.
