What can I shoot in a 308 Garand?

Bullet damage can/will happen in the form of op rod battering with bullets over 173 grains. This was found in the USMC Teams way back in 1996-97 during their final few years with the M14 platform at the national level. They had to keep spare op rods. Keep you bullet weight below the 170 grain mark and you will be just fine! :D

I've heard that loading a 168gr bullet can damage the op rod after time as opposed to 150gr stuff. Is there any truth to this?

Or could this only happen when shooting 30-06 and not .308?

In handloads, you could get away on having less ''hot'' cartridges, less powdered loads.

heh, I agree with you but in this case the condition of the original barrel was so bad that it was a "rebarrel first ask questions later" situation. I was actually thinking about trying to do something like this. (hoping link works)

But a wise man talked me out of it.

I'll take "Questions I should have asked first" for $500, Alex.
