What case lube do you use?

I have been reloading about 15 years, very low volume. Maybe 500 to 1000 rounds a year. I started with a Lee kit which I still use. The kit included a tube of Lee's water-based case lube, which is all I've ever used. I've since used one or maybe two tubes of the lube, but I wonder what everyone else likes.

Pros of the Lee Lube:

It's cheap as dirt...I estimate I've reloaded between 7000 and 10000 rounds of ammo with either two or three tubes of lube at about $3.00 per tube. The stuff also doesn't separate or degrade over time.

It's non-detrimental to powder; you can use it to clean/lube the inside of the case mouth with no worries.

It helps you clean the cases.....I smear it on with my fingertips, size, and buff off later with a rag. If there's any grit on your case, you'll feel it with your fingertips when applying the lube..

It's non-toxic and odourless, very pleasant to work with in that respect.

You can thin with water and dunk cases, then let them dry. Or you can lube with fingers, let dry. Either way, if for some reason you want to, you can lube now, size later.

Cons:

Buffing off the cases can be a pain, especially if the lube has had lots of time to dry. This is especially noticeable with once-fired factory cases; I usually Brasso them after the first resize which helps.

Smearing the lube on and being careful not to lube the shoulder or to use too much lube is also a rather picky job.

Since none of my friends are handloaders, I've never tried any other lube and don't have clue one what's out there. All opinions welcome!

Imperial Sizing Wax for regular reloading.
RCBS lube for tougher operations like case-forming.
I, also, wasn't too happy with the Hornady spray. (One Shot or something?)

I haven't been loading that long but I find the RCBS Lube and Lube Pad to work rather well, you can lay 10 cases on the pad and roll all 10 back and forth, faster than using the Lee stuff on your fingers, but ya it is messy.

i actually liked the hornady one- shot- i had a can that seemed to last for years, and i used to shoot a lot of 308- had a REAL m14 and 20 round mags- can't seem to get it anymore locally, so now it's the rcbs spray

I use homemade lube consisting of equal parts of lanolin & mineral oil. I melt the lanolin & then add the mineral oil, pour it into a small jar and let it cool. It turns into a vaseline like form. I put some of this on my RCBS lube pad and it works quite well however a bit messy. I got this idea from a fellow CGN'er but can't remember who it was but I do thank him as this lube works real well for me. It's a lot faster than using the Lee lube from the tube. I am not knocking the Lee lube, it does work well, just slower to apply.

I've tried the Lee lube and like it, but I prefer Imperial Sizing Wax. Tried mica in the case mouths (failure :( ) and Lyman spray lube (stuck cases), went back to the wax.
I do use the Lyman stuff for light misting my 9mm cases before going through the progressive.

For lubrication qualities, the best I have tried is STP, the automotive type, desighned to go into the cars oil supply. A bit hard to get off.

YEP! I am still on the tin of STP i got years back before they started putting it in plastic bottles.
Works well on a roll pad.
Then i put my shells in a tin and give them a good spray with cheap de-greaser and pour boiling water over them.
That old tin of STP will see me out i'm sure.
OH! I once read on another forum of a person saying that KY Gel works great.:D:eek: .45-90

Lyman spray. The RCBS spray isn't as good. I've never much liked the idea of individually lubing cases, so I avoid waxes and pastes for all but case forming type operations.

Better yet, I usually use collet dies; no lubing at all

I do the direct opposite of Dmay: Imperial for major case reforming and RCBS pad lube for routine stuff. Imperial is now being supplied by Redding I believe and should be widely available at good stores by now.
