What 223 bullets are you using for target shooting on the cheap? I'm looking for something that shoots reasonably well but is cheap cheap cheap!

I haven't been reloading for the 223 Remington for long but have been trying a few different bullets and like the Hornady 55 gr. FMJ. Using a 1 in 12" twist barrel so I don't want something too heavy.

So what do you like? Where did you get them? How much?

Thanks for your time!

Wholesale had Rem 55gr FMJ/WC for 7.99 per 100. That's the cheapest I've ever found them. I bought 3K.

I think the ogive on them varies a lot, OAL on finished rounds has a lot of deviation, but they're good for plinking or if you're a bad shot like me. I've tried Hornady 55 FMJ/WC and they were a lot more consistant, but more expensive.

If you're really cheap you could cast your own. I've also seen a kit that will turn used 22LR cases into .224 jackets, then you swage(?) your own lead into them, but I think that's only for the clinically insane.

Ya, that is about what Higginson's is charging for some Hornady 55 gr. FMJ.

What is the WC in FMJ/WC? Don't think it is a wad cutter :)

And no, I don't think I want to cast my own as I do want it jacketed. And making my own from 22LR cases sounds like too much work!

The wc stands for..." with cannelure "..the serrated/gnurled ring around bullets for crimping into.

I use the Rem 55 fmjs from Wholesale. Sports....if I could get Hornady FMJs at the same price I'd buy them instead as they are more accurate in my rifles ..

223

The 223 brass is real easy to get for next to nothing and the bullets are cheap so reload. There is usually brass on this site from $10 or $20/1000.
With the dangerous cargo charges being applied lately you may get better prices at your local shop. Rem and Winchester as per the Wholesale catalog work real well and last I bought were in the $7.99 range. I am about to start reloading and will begin with the 223 cuz I got lots of it so I can afford to screw some up. My $0.02

"...don't need the cannelure really..." No you don't, but that doesn't mean you can't use that bullet. Just seat it so the case mouth is at the bottom of the cannelure. Or ignore it altogether. Just because there's a crimping groove it doesn't mean you have to crimp that bullet.

Yes, when I said "bullets" I was refering to bullets not loaded ammo. I haven't seen 223 brass that cheap but haven't been looking either really as I purchased 500 cases new. Then I can watch the case life from new. And it's pretty. ;)

Dangerous cargo? You must be talking about loaded ammo, right? I'm only asking about projectiles here.

Sure, you can ruin a case in the press but theres not much in reloading that you can "afford to screw up"! Do it right every time. If you're not sure pull the ammo appart and start over.

Yes, that is what I meant by "it doesn't hurt". (Although, now that I read it again I see I wrote "heart"... dumb... must have been sleepy. ;) )

Elmer, I did some lookin around when I bought the bullets to reload with and at the time the cheapest place and the best selection was at Wholesale. Yes the dangerous goods applies to loaded bullets but also to powder and primers which you will need.I have bought the bullets I wanted to use and then got the primers and powder locally.By screw-ups I was referring to possibly deforming some brass or such. I would take apart anything screwed up that was loaded wrongly if I knew at the time. Wouldnt be good to destroy a perfectly good rifle. Last time I looked there was both bullets and brass on the reloading site. Post a wanted ad too and see what surfaces. Good luck and let us know if you find any good deals.

If your serious about target shooting (ie. ISSF etc) then at least look at both the Hornady A-max and the Hornady HPBT, also, take a look at the Sierra HPBT MatchKings

Prices below are from Wholesale Sports
Hornady A-MAX MATCH BULLETS • Grain - 52 $20.99/100
Hornady MATCH BULLETS • Grain - 52 • Type - BTHP • $18.99/100
Hornady MATCH BULLETS • Grain - 53 • Type - HP • $17.99/100
SIERRA BULLETS 500 PAK • Grain - 52 • Type - HPBT • $102.99/500

These should all do well in a 1:12 twist with Varget Powder and some Match Primers (I reccomend CCI BR4's)
