Guys, buddy of mine just picked up a new 12 gauge Beretta extrema, he is thinging of using it this deer season. He asked the sales person what choke he should use, he was not confident on there response, so I figured I would ask here.

Thanks,

RB

well what are you using for shot?? If your using slugs vs SSG or 00Buck it will depend. If yourshooting is going to be in close and your using shot, then you can get away with modified. If you think your going to be out past 65 yards with shot, you may want to go with full. If your using rifiled slugs try your modified. I have shot both modified and improved with slugs in my old deer shotgun, and had different results. Best is to go to the range and try and see what best suits your gun by praticing.

The best slug accuracy is normally found with an open choke. If the gun has screw in chokes, it might be worth while to see if this holds up for your particular gun. Figuring out how to mount a decent set of sights is more important than the choice of choke. With the factory bead it won't make much difference which choke you use.

I shoot an extrema1 for deer...I use 3.5 winchester 00 buck with mod choke and put all 18 into a deer sized target at 50 yards...he should pattern his own gun but this would be a good starting point.

Dilly's experience is a good starting point. As he and others have said, pattern the specific gun with the specific load option at the anticipated distances - patterning the gun is the best option.

Try em all at 50 yards. It'll tell you what your gun likes with the different chokes.
Most shotguns pattern similar with "alike" chokes in regards to slugs and buck shot.
You could take everyone elses experience here but shooting the various chokes yourself is really the only way to know what "your" gun will do with YOU shooting it when the time comes to make the decision to pull the trigger.

I spent a lot of money trying different chokes and ammo and i'm good to go with my findings. I'd share but i bet you'll be better off (and have more fun) if you worked it out yourself.

Good luck and have fun.

Mike
