I'm wondering what chronograph velocity others are getting from their 270 Winchester rifles that have 22 inch barrels.
In my Remington 700 I seem to be getting about 200 feet per second less then what is listed in my loading manuals for 130-150gr bullets, and am wondering if others are getting similar results when choreographing their loads from 22 inch barrels. ( manuals I refer to are lyman, hornady, sierra, nosler, speer, and a few others ) I realize that the manuals list for 26 inch barrels and some velocity loss is to be expected with a 22 inch barrel, but 200 fps. seems more then I would have expected for 4 inches less barrel length. Also this applies to all the powders I have tried ( IMR4064, IMR4350, H-4831SC ).

Seems about right. Factory winchesters 130gr were low 27--ish over my chrono. Box I think said 2900fps. Wasn't my gun it was my buddies savage. They say 50fps per inch. Seems right on in your case

I've got a 22.5" barrel on my tikka and I got 2990 from 130gr Win power points and 2980 from 130gr SST over 59.5gr H4831 hand loads. Maybe my Chrony is optimistic?? I don't know.

The difference in FPS with a longer or shorter barrel can vary greatly depending on bullet weight and powder used, sometimes the difference between a 26" and a 22" is minimal, and sometimes it is 100 FPS. Slow burning powders seem to show the largest difference, again depending on what bullet it is pushing. Going from a 26" barrel on my STW to a 30" with H1000 or similar showed up to 100 FPS per inch gain. But the difference between my 24" 7mm08 and the 20" barrel was only a 150 FPS loss total with 140 grain bullets.

It isn't too often that my loads duplicate the published data, most often my loads are slower.

Your chrony sounds to be dead on.
I used to get 3100 and change, from 60 grains of the old war surplus H4831, which is a bit faster than the new H4831, with 130 grain bullets in my Sako 270 with 24 inch barrel.
With all the chronographs out there owned by shooters, it is absolutely unreal how the loading books can put out all those loads that sound so good, but are actually up to at least 200 fps less than shown in their books.
Barrel loss is about 25 fps less, per inch of shorter barrel.

I get just over 3000 average with 130 gr Barnes X over RL22 (59 gr maybe, I forget the charge) out of a win 70 with a 22" barrel. I was going to rebarrel it (have no fondness for the 270), but it was my brother's gun and is very accurate with that bullet, so I guess I won't. Maybe. For now. - dan
