G'day,

Wondering what pistols were used by Canadians in WW2 that are Canadian made only? Especially the tankers. Are they easy to come by? And how much should one expect to spend on one?

Thanks a lot for you time guys and gals!

Don't know about tankers specifically but I know they used Inglis browning hi powers and 38 S+W revolvers.

Inglis HP, S&W and no doubt a few webleys (enfield # 2 ) here and there....

Sorry ' re read' your query, as per used see above, as per made in Canada Inglis HP

The Inglis Brownings were the only Cdn. made ones. Very late in the war, though. Were any used by tankers? I don't know. Reasonable specimens seem to sell for $350-$750.

The Inglis HP always seem to command a higher price, even the Chinese made ones with the grossly graduated rear sights......

father was trained as a tanker at the end of the war but germany surrendered before he was shipped out.

started out with the Enfield revolver in 38, and then a 1911, and thompson, and finally on to an Inglis and Sten

I guess they were trying ot figure out what theater they were going to send them in to and attached to which army.

Cheapest one to find now is an Enfield revolver but if its missing the lanyard ring good luck finding one.

Essentially the same stuff they issue now - the Inglis Hi Power. We have had so many of the Inglis Hi Powers in storage that, last I heard, they could still issue new ones that were made for WW2.

for canadian officers they could also supply thier own pistols as was custom in the commonwealth at the time, most officers came from the richer ranks of society and it was common for parents or loved ones to purchase a going away gift.

or so rumour has it...

In 1939 standard was S&W HE MkII .455" and some Colt New Service .455" wer also in use.
S&W .380" M&Ps were obtained from 1940 and were the standard from then on.
Colt M1911A1 was also on limited issue.
Inglis Browning started production in 1944 and was issued.
RCN had an assortment of handguns in 1939 including Webley .455"s and purchased Colt NS 45LC cal.
RCAF purchased several hundred Enfield No2 MkI in 1937.
