What did I see disappearing into the undergrowth?

Caught a sound, turned to see a flash of movement, and the back half of something not very tall vanishing into the growth.

Dark. Black or dark brown (I was looking towards the sun, so not a great look at color). A little taller than a house cat, Looong tail, tapered like an otter's. Was fairly moist in the undergrowth, so may have been wet. Definitely not a fox.

Only saw the arse end and tail, slid back up the trail where it had gone, and did not hear or see anything else.

Didn't hump along like an otter. Smooth gait, from what I saw. Too much tail to be a cat

Wondering if I saw a Fisher or a Marten.

Was a great morning out! Tonight I cut and wrap a small doe! :D

Tail looked skinny, like an otter, same taper, but seemed way too long and large for it to have been an otter. I've seen them on land, too, and they are not really a fast mover on the level.

Starting to think Fisher.

RoscoeT, Thanks. Just taking a break from the cutting.
Not large, but gonna be first class eats!

I think we have a winner in the Fisher corner.

Looked at some pictures, and the size and shape fit really well. The martin pictures all show a shorter and fluffier tail.

Was a great morning out, and a busy day for the rest of it. All done, cut, bagged, in the freezer, except for the 5 pounds of meat destined for jerky. It's curing right now.
