Got a question I'm working with an older gun and I'm getting better at hitting where I intend on at the 20 yard range . However I'm noticing difficulty going past the 30 yard mark with just the irons is this normal or are my eyes going on me. What distance do you guys shoot to without a scope?

Good question, I have no way of measuring distance. I'll guess 25-50yards.
Might be the sight setup you have. I hate notch and post sights.

I should also mention I'm shooting with out supports as in standing and no sling. I'm using a straight forward front blade and rear notch non adjustable set up.
I'm getting about a 2 inch group at 20 yards which I assume is sad. At 40 yards it's stretching to 4+ inches after that and it's kinda all over the place. Also gets hard to see where I'm aiming.

Without knowing what gun model you have, it is difficult to judge the best distance to shoot. 25 yards with open sights is about the norm. If the gun is capable of installing a peep sight, the distance may extend to 50 with best results when gun is bench rested. I have 3 Mossberg 151s that I found peeps for and the max range I shoot them at is 50 as eyesight plays a great part, and the intended target seems to disappear.

get your eyes checked, i just started wearing glasses(at 30), before that i needed a scope to hit anything past 50 yards, now the 3'x3' gong at 200 yards is no problem with irons....

I was shooting a 10 inch gong off hand at 100 yards with my 10/22 yesterday with peep sights. I was hitting it at least 70% of the time.

I used to be really bad at off hand shooting to the point that I avoided it if at all possible. Then one day I decided to have a go at it and keep at it until I got better. It took a few hundred rounds and a few visits to the range but I got consistently better. I'd say with a bit of practice and patience, you too will become a better shot.

Blade and notch sights work for some people but I really prefer peeps. If you get a chance to try out a set, I highly recommend it. Made a huge difference for me.

Get a good solid rest say at 25 yds and sight in your rifle. You can't hit off hand if you don't know where your rifle hits. With relatively good eyes 100 yds with open sights should be easily doable. Offhand is not the most accurate way to shoot, look through scope when held offhand and you will see how much you move. trigger control is also very important, jerking the trigger pulls you off target. Practice, practice, and have fun.

Thanks I'll give that a try and see what I get it may also be ammo as well.

I know on Saltspring them shooting their annual trophy shoot at 100 yard with irons and results are usually good. It is a matter of quality of sights and using correct target, can't be about your eyes. Your eyes should be focusing on front pin, while rear notch as well as target MUST be blurry. Black circle of about 8" will do the trick. Paint black some paper plates of this size and staple those to big hunk of cardboard and you are gtg.

you should be able to hit gongs at 100 yards with iron sights no problem, like someone said, its just practice (trigger control is important)

had success at that range with a 10/22, AR-15, M14, ruger mkII, sks, rem 870 (slug)

I do about 5 inches at 100m with my 10/22 with support. My Norinco 22 mauser copy will do about 3 at 50m kneeling position.

Longest shot I've made with iron sights was a goher at 92yds. Took me 3 tries, but I got him. Anything within 0-35 yds no prob. With a scope though, you can easily double it.

I am 19....I can hit a pop can at 50 yards with my 10/22 carbine with irons about %40 if the time.....I do think that with a longer barrel, non-semi gun (ie; bolt gun) and maybe? better ammo I could increase that % some.
