Firstly apologies if this should be in edged weapons but I figured that (a) this is maybe an older military item and (b) this forum would have the more knowledgeable folks frequently visiting.

So, a number of years ago I acquired a Japanese sword. It is not a full Katana length but somewhat shorter. I am not sure if this is an issued item for soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army or not. Perhaps it is a mere copy or somesuch but if so I've not seen one with the Japanese writing on it before.

Any help from those with greater learning than I would be most appreciated. Any estimates as to value would also be welcome.

Don't have the full details, but my bud has one. WW2 era or earlier. The Japanese army mass produced them for issue to officers? (i assume), they were made out of all metal where a proper samurai sword would have wood and fabric components. Can't speak to whether it is a forgery.

The Type-95 Shin Gunto with the cast aluminium grip was intended for NCOs and had a European style steel scabbard. The Type-94 and Type-98 officers shin gunto had a more traditional wrapped grip and wod lined steel scabbard painted brown with brass ornamentation. Neither had etched characters on the blade, sorry to say I think you have a post-45 souvenir type sword.

Thanks everyone. It is a neat item that I've had for years that I was kinda hoping had some authenticity to it ( read too much Bob Lee Swagger - 47th Samurai perhaps ! ) but never mind. I'll go with thinking that it an authentic copy !

Special thanks to Price 449 for the especially useful comment from Toronto :)

post wat or end of the war japanese katana sold to the soldier or tourist the kanji.... maybe they have a sense or like in the souvenir not make sens at all..

90% of the katana we see today are repro or souvenir..... i will only buy from a dealer who are specialised in this weapons beceause they are well made and some are real hard to tel from the real one....

just chek on ebay.....

its definitly not a japanese army katana of any rype like Nyles say before .....

It's a Chinese souvenir repo, the character on the sword is written in Chinese like, I speak/write Chinese that's how I know :)
also the writings are machine stamped. check this page scroll down same stamping on your sword is there.
