I picked this up at an auction, with the intent of doing a project. No markings on the gun itself, but it's obviously a Cooey with a somewhat nicely reworked stock, the butt plate however is marked Custom Styled Guns by Judd, Waterford Ontario.

Looks allot like an older Cooey 39 with a custom stock. I don't remember the receiver being milled like that (for a peep sight?) but maybe it was customized...? That or I don't remember it right.

That butt plate is sort of sad - my books tell me that the butt plate / recoil pad should follow the lines / surfaces of the wood stock - so should be a long tapered toe on the pad - appears gone or worn off - is that a metal plate protruding? Might be an unusual old pad, but really is almost all wrong - should not be screw heads showing, either.

The nut on the action screw and the pad with an exposed slot screw looks a little Mickey Duck.
Did it not come with a bolt?
Sure hope you did not overpay!
So what would the project be?

Former Cooey 82 maybe? They had peep sights installed back there.

That is my thought as well, with a home made stock.
I may have a mount for a scope that mounts in the 2 holes on the receiver.

Now that I think about it, a 82 was a repeater, so not that one. Don't know.

You might be correct - the little single shot that I have is not a Cooey - is a Lakefield with that screw into the dovetail insert. The Cooey 39 that is here has the rear sight into a dovetail - no screw. I have one Cooey 60 left here - has a scope - no rear sight in it - just a dovetail in the barrel - not sure what it used to have there.

Maybe a change from cooey to winchester but never seen a cooey without barrel markings. I have both.

have not seen that in a parts search for cooey.

Go here - (delete the space in https) htt ps://www.gunpartscorp.com/gun-manufacturer/winchester/rifles-win/cooey-series/cooey-39 - third row down shows the nut for the dovetail slot, the screw and the rear sight - says is for Cooey 39, 60, and many other Cooeys listed. The rear sight in this Cooey 39 must not be an original Cooey rear sight.
