What do I look for in my first rifle?

Hello all,

I'm not entirely sure of what I need to be looking for in a rifle. I'm quite new to shooting, but plan on hunting just about everything that breathes. I will have Remington 870 by the end of the week, but am interested in a rifle as well.

I'm hoping for something easy to use and maintain, with access to a myriad of ammunition choices and with some serious stopping power.

Any thoughts are much appreciated!

What to look for?
Caliber; choose a caliber that'll drop anything, available anywhere.
Magazine; do you want detachable, internal, none...
Finish; stainless, blue, wood, synthetic....
Brand; pick one ;)

I'm not a hunter yet, but starting this year. My first dedicated hunting rifle is going to be a Browning x-bolt, blued with wood and detachable mag, in 30-06.

As mentioned, caliber is an important choice for hunting. Many places have limitations on what can be hunted with a given caliber.

Another consideration is how you prefer to load and unload, and what you expect to encounter. It doesn't get much easier than using a detachable magazine, but you might prefer something different.

The first thing to look for is a good fit between you and the rifle once you find one that shoulders nicely then explore the options available for finishes then narrow down the calibers that suit the game and the maximum caliber restrictions if any that apply to the area you want to hunt in

I agree. If it doesn't fit or feel right it will either get lost in a safe or you'll be frustrated by its and your performance. Try a bunch and see what you like.
