I have .44mag LEE dies, so do I just need a .44spl seating die?

Also the extra .44spl die doesn't have be made by LEE right?

thanks

You can probably get away with your current set. The sizer will work fine. The expander might not if the center post can't move down far enough, so you'll need to check. The seating die will likely have enough adjustment.

For the most part, the die companies make a combined 44spec/magnum set, just like .38 spec/.357 mag.

The Lee .44 Magnum dies can be used for both special and magnum.

how sure are you?

...in the LEE catalouge it says .44spl dies can be used to load the magnum (just like you can use .38spl for .357 and .40 for 10mm) but it doesn't say it works other way around.

If it bothers you that much, just use .44 Magnum brass and load it using .44 Special loads. I've done it before with no problems. .44 Special loads are pretty much the same as the .44 Magnum cowboy loads anyway.

Yes you can use the 44mag dies for 44 Special. You can check the Lee page and they list the dies as 44spl/44mag. All that happens is you turn the seater down farther. The factory crimp die will also work, the sizer is part of the die and and crimper is adjustable.

I just use 44mag brass and load down to 44spl velocities or less. Note that there are some powders that shouldn't be loaded light such as WW 296.

Check some of the powder manufacturers websites and look for Cowboy Action Loads for recommendations.
