What do you do when a taxidermist won't answer the phone?

I took an elk head in to get mounted in the beginning of February 2011. I was told it would take 16 months tops. Called him last summer and he said that he would get an update and call me back later. Never called. Now he won't answer his phone, his voicemail is full, and he won't answer text messages. I have a feeling that I'm screwed.

Out him....
Or go there in person.
Had a guy in Agassis who was slower than molasses .
He was recommended by the trapper I bought the hide from.
Anyways, wont be using his service again.
Seriously go see the guy and get your property back.

If he's local go see him , if not and you know someone close send them as a proxy. Face to face communications are easier to judge whether an honest mistake was made or he's blowing smoke up your tailpipe.

I had that same thing happen many years ago when I was a teenager. I ended-up going to the guys house and getting my frozen hide back, he had made a real mess skinning it and I had to have another guy sew the pieces back together again. Like the other fellows said, pay him a visit. WK

is he a small shop from abby? I been tryin to reach my taxidermist to bring some work in but not getting any replies. wonder if it's same guy?
I do know my taxidermist was going on some sponsored hunts out of country..... as many of them seem to do in that industry....
good luck, hope you get yer mount in good order.

I got a hold of him for you, and let me take a pic of it so you could see how its coming. I think it looks OK.

Owning a taxidermy company, I am trying to be on the defence of the taxidermist, however, your time frame is a tad to long even for a world class taxidermist. I strive to have a turn around of 12 months or less, unfortunately my own time frame was broken, just grateful its with a good friend who is understanding, as it has taken almost two years to get some scraps to do a repair on a zebra hide. None the less at this point I would suggest going to the taxidermist and retrieving your hide and antlers, and try not to be to disappointed if you do not get the original hide back or the hide is buggered. That's a long time for a hide to be frozen and can guarantee there will be burn on it. I am trying to see the bright side of things and hope there is a mounted elk waiting for you in his studio. best of luck

Had that happen to me once. The guy took my money even though he was bankrupt, messed up my beautiful bear to, NEVER AGAIN. Qualify, Qualify, Qualify!!!!!

I would have called at exactly 12 months. Give it a few months longer and I'll be taking it back. Having a friend who does taxidermy work and does a good bit of sub work for advance taxidermy he says 12 months but is usually done a few months ahead of time.

Now big company's like Advance their turn around times can be a bit more then a year.

^ This is good advise, but if it were me knowing what I know now take your animal back right away, don't wait.

as a former taxidermist i cAN SAY I HAD MY WORK DONE And back to the customer within 6 months, it takes time to ship things back and forth to have tanned, drying period, painting and touch up - it isn't a 10 day turnaround process and if you get something back that fast it hasn't dried properly. i know some guys have a 5 yr backlog -so if you aren't willing to wait for a quality mount take it to you nearest haxidermist and enjoy the smell.....otherwise check your guy before you take your trophy to him..ask at the local sports store but don't offer it till you see some work..I had examples of my work at a number of places and offered 100% moneyback guarantee - that's why I stayed in business..took in a lot of repairs from other guys who thought they were taxidermists.. you get what you pay for........
