what do you do

I was wondering what everyone on here does when it comes to cleaning rifles before a hunt. I always keep bores clean but after my final sight in before I head out I don't clean because I have always been under the impression that a bright shiny bore needs a few foulers to acheive it's best accuracy. This practice has always seemed to work well for me.

I have experienced poor accuracy/fliers from a clean bore during shooting session's, particularly with my Mauser M66 in 30-06, usually after 10 or so rounds down the tube I can get 1/2" - 1" groups at 100. By the way for the last couple years I havn't used any oil in the bore, I always use Wipe-out bore cleaner which claims to have an anti-corrosion agent and havn't had any rust problems yet.

so what do you guys do?

I sight in, and I clean the gun... I'd rather protect the gun with a little oil than leave it through the season without any oil... But, that being said, I have done exactly what you do, but not any more...

I should clarify that I don't let it go the whole season without any cleaning, usually a couple weeks then it's time to clean and take a few shots to check things out anyways. I have my own little range right outside my front door so it makes quick sight ins and practice shots pretty easy.

I generally sight in as close to the hunting season as I can. When I'm zeroed, I clean the rifle at the range and then send 3 or 4 rounds down to "prefoul". I can store that gun or maybe push 1 dry patch through the barrel and leave it for weeks.

Same, but w/o the tape. I never oil my bores, other than a very light oil after the post season clean-up.

I hunt too often in wet or snowy conditions to risk allowing moisture or worse to enter my bore. Tape works real well for me and blows off before the bullet exits the crown

I'm gonna start using it.

I'm usually home at night, so my guns get a chance to dry out by the wood stove.

When I figure out which rifle or two is going I go to the range with a squeaky clean bore get zeroed and don't clean again until after hunting season usually.

Oh ya and like my hero the internet legend I do the tape thing as well. But I change it often cause condensation seems to build up right thar at the muzzle if its really wet out and I've seen it cause rust. Bad juju....

I check zero (most of my rifles are zeroed anyway) and then tape up the muzzle wiht electrical tape. It only comes off if a shot has been fired or I htink that wanter may have intruded and frozen..

I clean at the end of the season- There really is little need to celan during the season, especailly with the stainless rifles I refer for both looks and durability.

Not sure what "sage" advice means. But I like blued and walnut.

I never really thought about that...I never thought that the stainless clashed wiht the star trek outfit...I h*have* questioned stainless and pink tutu, though...

Sage does indeed make a nice fly rod, although that is not what Salty intended in his post.

Not to long before deer season I sight in and kill a whole bunch of paper targets, then I clean er up good, and fire two shots and put it away till hunting time.
