wanted to lighten up a sks for a young lady shooter, and this is what i ended up with. bbl is down to 18.5 , and as you can see, nothing left underneath. the holo sight is holding good. just kinda thought it turned out neat, and thought id see what everyone thought.
i think if she likes it, and all that, the next thing im gona do, is swap out the bottom of the mag housing for a flat 5 round one off a chinese one, if it can be found. if not, ill mill it down myself.

looks great.

How does the action cover mount hold up? does it improve accuracy?

I ordered one, but I heard mixed reviews...

i built that one. its the factory cover, i just got the right shape of weaver base to fit the cover, ( it was for a marlin of some sorts, and i have the number writen down in the shop) and drilled/ tapped the original topcover. it holds very well, its so dam tight to get the cover back on. it will prolly lossen up after some shooting, but it will be good enough for plinking. i made sure the hOLO is back far enough to be able to use the stripper guide still aswell.

dont really know how much i took off, guess i could weigh up the leftovers. it definatly feels different

A shorter red dot like an Aimpoint Micro, Bushnell TRS-25 or Burris FastFire would allow a pretty much normal cheek weld on the stock.

actually, beleve it or not, the holo is very comphy. its a very good fit for me. feels quiet natural.
it hasnt changed how it shoots at all , by removeing that 1.5" of bbl.

its become sombodys fav guy allready. now, if someone has any idea, where i could pick up a flat 5 round floorplate, that would get done. ive struckout wherever i have asked

did you do the barrel chop work yourself? I'm kind of thinking about doing the same to my Ruskie. Details of the work, including were it was done and what it cost you (if you had a gun smith do that is) would be great.

You can PM me if you like.

I saw this thread again and the picture beckons me to just do it!!! Very tastefully and skillfully done.

I am tempted to break my vow never to alter my 56 Tula. If ever, will keep the barrel at original length due to lack of necessary know-how.

Beater, there are gentlemen in this forum that sell TAPCO 5 rounders. You may want to post a WTB on the EE parts exchange or start a new thread in red rifles.

Quick question - how did you shorten the bbl 1.5" without flaking the chrome lining in the bore and ruining the crown?

Also, I think you might want to consider one of the short rails that replaces the rear sight and going with an Aimpoint Micro or similar sight.

Considering the look you're going for, you might also want to consider a ruggedized stock like maybe a chinese red fiberglass or something?

I like it so far.

Looks like original style 5 rounders will have to be cut and milled unless they become available . I plan on doing that myself on a project. I'll be removing all sights and install a Choate mount. Red dot or scope it like a Mini-30.

Nice.
I plan on shortening a beech VZ58 buttstock so my wife can enjoy some some Czech 58 goodness. She runs her AR middy with the stock fully forward and I spliced two junker M1 Carbine stocks together just behind the small of the stock to make one serviceable stock for her M1 Carbine . The spliced stock is about one and a quarter shorter ( maybe a little more ) than standard and a stock ammo pouch covers the splice.
