I judt got myself my first 22 caliber rifle, nice gun I just love shooting it. I wonder if there is anything to shoot with it to apply my shooting skills. Well, grouse come to mind - anything else? In Canada I mean.

Gophers, and one time when we had a bad infestation of Grass Hoppers I would shoot them at 20 yds but that was when my eyes were better.

Rabbit, upland game birds, small varmints , crows , squirrel , rats , and a bunch of other critters in the rimfire ballistics range.
36-40 gr Hollow Point , high velocity.

Too bad in Nova Scotia you can't shoot crows with a .22 LR rimfire.

I used to battle the G.O.P.H.E.R. insurgency with my .22, but recently I have found that due to their increased aggressiveness, a .17 HMR was necessary.

No bulls**t, a friend of my old man's put down an old horse with one shot with his .22 (he was only standing about 8ft from it, but still). I wouldn't have attempted this (I would've probably just downed the old buck with my 30/30) but old Gordy was one hell of a shot (even at distances greater than 8ft). That's the largest animal I've ever seen killed by .22lr.

the .22 is very very under estimated!! theres a story here were a native killed a black bear with one, dont know if its true.

Somewhere once I even read of an elephant being killed with a .22 handgun. I suppose that's possible if you hit it in exactly the right place, like behind the ear or something. I wouldn't try it unless I had no choice like self defense. You'd think that type of practice would be illegal in most if not all places.

Anyone have any links to bears, elephants, etc. being killed by .22s?

Ugh... I cringe at the ".22 can kill this/that..." stuff, of course it can, a beer bottle wielded in an extravagant manner can kill a hippo too, doesn't mean it should.

As for what I hunt with .22LR; gophers primarily, then crows, rabbits, squirrels, feral cats, pigeons, starlings, muskrats.

I am thinking that I might give my marlin model 60 semi-auto a try this grouse season, if thing's don't turn out well with that I will resort to using my 870 with #6 shot. Would rather see if I can find walkers and hit them at the neck base with the .22 instead of making a mess out of the breasts with a shotgun.

I just got off the phone and a friend told me of a horse that he killed with a .44 mag that ran away after the first shot and he had to finish it off about 30 minutes later. He hit it right between the eyes but he figured the bullet passed under the brain.

Cormorants!! My buddy has a 100' x 25' x 28' deep pond in his yard, and stocks it with fish. He said "wait until the F**kn Cormorants come and try and eat all my fish". So we sit back 50-80 yrds and I use my .22LR Cooey with a 3x-7X 20mm scope and pick them off. His dog then goes in and retrieves them. It saves the fish, adds entertainment and is a lot more neighbour friendly than a shotgun. P.S. If you do not get rid of them they will devour every single fish you have.
