What Do You Keep In Your Hunting Journal?

I just have small paperback notebooks.
2.5" x 3.75" with 100 or so lined pages.
I write the year on it and everytime I go fishing or hunting I write the date down and anything memorable.
I don't always remember to write down every excursion but I have a book for every year dating back to 1985.

I never bothered with a hunting journal, but did keep one for fishing, when I used to fish a lot. I kept track of the weather, depth, and lures used, and how many fish caught.

I've never kept a journal, but I kind of wish I did. Not so much for the "notes", but more so the for a history of my hunting and fishing adventures. Unless you are a trusted friend or partner, my secrets are coming to the grave. And the thing with those secrets, it's not like they need to be written down because those lessons and the knowledge it has brought has become ingrained into the soul. There are many things I forget, but when it comes to hunting and fishing, I remember events like it were yesterday.

When I was a kid that was on the coast fishing lots, I was a bit fanatic about a fishing journal. My family and I used to sail all over various parts of the coast, and whenever we revisited an area I pulled out the journal and it was 'Kelp bed near xyz cove, buzz bomb at 60 fee, ling cod" and "Good producing crab hole here" and "good salmon off xyz point, best ear;y morning with herring"

As a younger hunter I also kept journals like "Sept 26, ABC creek, 4 bucks sighted, couldn't get close enough to big one. Made 250 yard shot on second biggest with 175gr Nosler Partition handoad. Had to pack him out and it took all afternoon, got to truck well after dark. Saw 2 bears on way down, one ran but other one wanted to trail me for a bit until I yelled at him. Good hunting up there but hard pack down, next time take a tarp and a sleeping bag in case have to spend the night"

I kinda got away from hunting journals after digi cameras as I the camera would sorta record the hunt, whereas film cameras were expensive to take even one pic.

Every year I used to think I should start a hunting journal, like R M Patterson or Hemingway. Last year I started one and its just a notebook where I would record the days activities before hitting the rack. I love reading it. Its a great addition to pictures. I plan to keep it up. Wish I had started twenty years ago.

Keep of photo album with dates of harvests, location, and any interesting other photos such as trail cam pictures or scenery pictures, nothing detailed as good as a notebook would be for weather or game spotted, probably be a lot of hunted for 3 days dawn till dusk no deer but watched some squirrels.

I ttake a lot of photos when I travel and we’ve been making soft cover photobooks for several years now, but I like having a journal for hunting because you get some info/feeling that a photo just can’t explain. Also I’d love to have read about my grandparents adventures but all they have is photos and as amazing as a photo is, usually the best sight or experience is one where you can’t whip the camera out fast enough or forgot it in the car/camp...those “aaaah wish I had my camera” moments.

I have been frequenting a provincial recreation area the last 5 years. When I got home every trip I put everything I saw on one paper map rather than an electric device so it would be less likely to get lost.

House was broken into. Map was stolen.

So you are saying thieves were after your hunting locations.

Our moose camp has a journal that has been active since the 1950's. In addition to who shot what and where, it keeps track of weather, and little personal notes, like Joe went to town today to see Mary.
Joe is still a member, now married to Mary. (not real names)
Someone got stuck and where, the time we airlifted a guy out with broken ribs etc.
It's a very educational, and at times entertaining volume.
