Admidintly I am a newbie to the hand gun world with a thick skull, I have come on here and asked what would be the best gun for this and that
then went and bought something I thought would work best and not listening to the advice givin, it started with my SD9VE and went onto my GSG
and so on. My apologies to all who gave me very good advice and like I said went another way.

I think that I am learning with the help of this site and the local members of the KTSA gun club and the Powder Keg gun store here in Kamloops,
I started with the sd9 and when people said the trigger was bad I had no idea what they were talking about (my first non 22) but no comparison and
then came the Girsan MC-28 which is a much better gun than the sd9 and I thought WOW have I got myself a great gun here... Then I got my
Smith & Wesson 14-2 38 special and I know now what a real gun is all about, this gun is truly awesome and it is definitely a better shot than I am.

So with this new info and again re-reading the thread about which 22 I should buy for new users I returned the GSG 1911 and got myself a
Smith & Wesson 617 BNIB and if this K framed revolver shoots as good as my 38 special I am going to be the happiest guy at the gun range for some time.

Thanks everyone for the info and I promise that when I ask for advice that I will listen much better next time.

It's a great gun keep the gun clean and use standard CCI and you should be happy for a very long time.. and don't dry fire it..just in case

A couple of nice guns. Sometimes we can listen to all the advice we want but we have to find out for our self that hey the guys do know something. I keep going back to my k 38 because it just shoots so well. The 22 s well I have a few. Colt Woodsmen, Ruger MK 2, Colt Officier and a Ruger single six. I would recommend any of them for someone starting out. As you found out SW come with decent triggers. So your turning into a revolver man. SW and Ruger are two of the better ones.

silverfoxdj gave you excellent advice. (but try lots of different ammo to see what it likes).
DO NOT dry fire your revolver!!!
If you want to practice, pick up some snap caps.

No dry fire here, and so far I have tried several different kinds of ammo and the best so far is the CCI Mini Mags with bulk Winchester M-22's coming in second, I have to
stop by the gun shop and find a few more that I haven't tried yet.

I've heard dry firing a rim fire gun is bad and can break the firing pin... is there anything that stands out with the 617 that makes it specifically bad to dry fire?

Smith recommends you do not dry fire I did mine a couple of times and anquised over it so got out the measuring tools and the firing pin on mine does not come in contact with the cylinder as far as I can see, but I pay more attention to it now

Use a snap cap, or even a wall plug, that will prevent any damage.

Just don't use the cheap stuff in it as the wall are a little thinner and expand to the point the gun will jam after 30-40 rounds
