What do you make of my new SKS?

Refurb stamping was not always 100% consistent. My bet is that its a "clean" refurb.

That would be my bet too. I have a couple of refurbs in excellent condition. On one I had to look _very_ closely to see the refurb stamp on the stock...otherwise it looked new. The second one had a black bayonet, which is a sure sign of a refurb, but it looks great too....all matching numbers etc.

Nice rifle, but the crown is freshly done rather than painted, the bayo is black, and the stock looks fresh. Its my opinion that it is a nice refurb.

That bolt shows no signs of the primer hitting the bolt face. When a gun is fired, the primer actually pops out of its pocket then the case stretches into the face of the bolt pushing the primer back into its pocket. That's when you see on the bolt face the circle where the primer is hitting the bolt face. The gun is very clean to say the least but I myself can not confirm if its refurbished or not. I had a Russian SKS that evidently wasn't used yet people on this site were still saying its refurbish. Even my Chinese SKS which was advertised as unissued from a site sponsor, people on this site still were saying its refurbished and issued.

When you've had several hundred of them go across your work bench, you develop a different way to look at things.

Pretty sure 51 can come chrome or non chrome. Mine is a chrome lined 51 also.

This would be correct. In 1951 there were several factories making rifles and they did not make the transition simultaneously. I have two Tula 51s of each chrome and non chrome.

On the OPs rifle, it has clearly been recrowned during a factory refurb. An original barrel would have been crowned before it was blued, therefor a blued muzzle. This one is clearly clean cut and fresh with no blueing, thus recrowned at an armory at a later date.

Any idea how I can tell if it's chrome lined or not?

Also, I've decided to use this as my project gun. Already did some work on the trigger, lightening the trigger, reducing creep and smoothing out the sear :). I'll get to the stock this summer and see what the wood looks like underneath.

Trigger pull is between 5 and 6 lbs now.
