Which rifle do you prefer to shoot..the famous SMLE or the No.4 rifle.....

I find the aperature sights on my Long Branch No.4 rifles are much quicker at snap shooting..and with its heavier barrel and stiffer reciever a more accurate rifle.... the SMLE rifle has seen the British Commonwealth soldier though some of the bloodiest battles of both World War's and the Korean War ..as the rifle of the Aussie soldier...i really love my 1942 Lithgow rifle which was FTR'd in 1956.....new barrel and furnature...with its slick bolt action its still one hell of a weapon.

Gotta agree with desporterizer and canuck44.
The No.4 is a better shooter (for me at least), but the SMLE is just soo damn ###y.

Best Enfield

My 1941 LB is most accurate of my Enfield herd, but love the "feel" of my 1914 MKIII. One I havent fired since acquiring several years ago is my 1924 MKV, should be good shooter also. Come to think of it, I havent fired my '96 Long-Lee, '98 LEC or 1905 MKI SMLE! Man I gotta get to the range more!

I mentioned it before, in another thread, I like the SMLE for its PROPER Bayonet, and the looks. The No. 7 Bayonet, looks wrong on the No. 4 rifle, because well look how its attached, the barrel ring isn't attached to the barrel! :p Now for shooting I like the No. 4's micrometer sights when I've handled both the No. 1 and No. 4. I've never actually fired a Enfield. :(

I also like my 1941 LB to shoot ,my 1945 shoots better my Canadian issue SMLE looks great but the barrel is worn I haven't had the SSA to the range yet but it should shoot well the Aussies rebarreled it in 1946 then stuck her in grease till I degreased it

I prefer the No 4's for both shooting and looks. The rear micrometer sight lines up perfectly. Had many over the years, currently have 2 No 4 Mk II's and a No 5 Mk I on the way.

As i mentioned earlier i like my Long Branch No.4....very accurate....i have read that when the No.4 replaced the SMLE the troops were not impressed with the No.4...especially old soldiers who had used the SMLE for years and trusted it.....also the 2 position L type rear sight was not fondly thought of..lol

Thats neat about you owning a 1941 LB..I have never seen a 1941 dated rifle....have a 1942. & 1943......lots of history in your LB 1941

i have a LB 1941, 42, 43, 44 ,45 and 50 my 43 is MP marked used to have a 51 55 and 56 LB also have a 0L###x sten and a C1A1 used to have a C2 and a C1 stirling but they are gone to

You can get good shooting with either rifle. Number 4 is likely the better rifle, but the old Smellie, especially with that 17 inches of bayonet on the front, just looks so brutal that it's in a class all by itself.

For my money, the balance on the older rifle seems a little better. The heavy barrel on the Number 4, though, can make a real difference in shooting.

Aaaaaahhhh, it's an impossible question! Everybody needs 6 of each! And a Ross, of course.

I do like the No 4 rifle better, but you're right, that SMLE bayonet is one terrifying thing to imagine coming after you...they should have reused them on the No 4 rifles. That spike pigsticker is unimpressive, not that I'd want to be impaled by one...

Which one? I have LOTS of both! I like the Long Lee's and the carbines as well. (I DO mean carbines, not the No5 which is a rifle not a carbine, no matter what the dealers say):D
