I'm putting a colt ar 15 together ( SA20 lower,6920 upper.) And was wondering is there a best distance to sight it in at? Thanks

All my buis are 50
Non magnified optics I do at 50, magnified optics (Acog, DR, Viper) are 100. Personal preference though.

I sight in at 50 because out to 200M it is within 2" of the point of aim. Due to the height above bore axis the rifle should be close to on at 50 and 200.

What sights are you running? If you have ones that have preset elevation adjustments the easiest is to set the elevation for 200m zero at 50m using only the adjustment in your rear sight then step back to 200 and fine tune with front sight adjustments. For sets without preset elevations on the rear just basically zero at 50 and confirm and fine tune if necessary at 200.

Usage and terrain usually dictate that. 50/200 is likely standard for for most civilians.

Maybe 25/300 if you can tolerate high ordinate or targets are mostly @200+.

In the piney woods of East Texas a 100m zero was just right. West Texas was more suited to 25/300 zero.

25/300 tends to be a little more off in 50-100 shooting. For a backup 300 is about the max one would be typically shooting. Depends on the sight too. The M16a2 irons were meant to be sighted in at 200 then the elevation drum adjusts the rest out to 800.

There is some very useful information here:

the 36 yard "marine" zero makes sense, but I forget the reason.

I personally use a 2" low at 25m. Again, I don't have all the exact drops and distances off hand, but it works well in all distances I can shoot at.
