I decided I need a new go to hunting rifle. I'm thinking of a ruger 77 hawkeye in left-hand.
I'm wondering if anyone here has experience with these? I hunt deer, moose, antelope and soon plan on going after elk. I've already decided on 30-06 but can't pick a rifle. The Ruger seems to be a good choice because I want a M-98 based action with 3 position safety. I decided not to go with Rem or Savage. Nothing against them but It's time to try something new.
Can anyone give me a range report on the 77? I'm wondering how the new LC6 trigger functions.
I can get one of these in blue on walnut through WSS for 669.95 which to me seems like a pretty fair price.

i seen a guy shooting some pretty tight groups with a m77 in 223 the other day at my range, gun was stock, middle range scope. seemed to be able to cycle it fast enough, it was stainless with a tupperwear stock, so its weather proof, and his groups spoke well enough.

ive been thinking of buying one since.

Well I struggled with mine, now I say struggled but really after the 4th trip to the range glassbedding the action and Tang, adjusting the trigger as best possible which sucks on a ruger however the LC6 is a way better trigger than teh M77 Is and IIs TRUST ME, and finding the right combo the 300 wm actully shoots respectable groups. I will be honest I have 3, 77s one is a Hawkeye and the other 2 are M77IIs which shoot well. My hawkeye needed some TLC but at 50 yards it will shoot a .5 inch 3 shot group and at 100 it will shoot a 1.0-to 1.25 inch cold bore 3 shot group. When I heat the barrel up it it will settle into 1.0 inch 3 shot groups. The barrel seems good with no flyers to speak of, and I would be intrested in trying some accubonds or Berger VLDs to see what it will really do.

Now to answer your quesion RUGER, the new trigger is much better mine is around 3 lbs now, there are no adjustment screws so you need to know the trigger before you screw wiith it. Ruger has always built a rock solid action, dependable, and very very strong, look at there handguns, and #1s they are built like a tank. No they are not a high end target barrel barrel, but respectable and with a little work they can shoot good as any factory hunting rifle, they have never been known for mid sized bore accuracy in and deer moose sized animal hunting gun. Ruger also make an excellent safari gun, for the big stuff and with the controlled feed action that is what you want.
The stocks are reasonably OK! no they are not a high end item but they are built strong and take a beating to mark them up, Ruger is built for the working man that wants a dependable rifle.

I praised the rifle BUT...Is it the end all to be all rifle NO, is it my favorite, No but there is nothing wrong with it.

Would i buy a 4th one, if a deal came along yes I would.

I have the MKII in SS pepper laminate stock in 25-06. Although it is on the heavy side (8.5 lbs) it is the sweetest shooting rifle that I have owned. Factory ammo clover leaf's all day long at 50 m, 2.5" groups at 200 m. I have yet to sit down and try to do some load development for it, really haven't had the need. This is one that I am really happy with. Works just fine on white tails. Bang flop last year!

I don't have a Hawkeye but do own a 77MKII in .204Ruger that shoots like a hot damn. I definately plan on adding a Hawkeye to my collection soon. I really like Rugers among modern production guns.

Well I think you guys have me convinced. I think its almost time to let the old sav 308 collect dust. I'm going to WSS tomorrow and if they have what I'm looking for It might just follow me home.
If most are getting 1 to 1 1/2 MOA with theirs thats plenty good enough for me for a hunting rig.
Can anyone tell me what the fit and finish is like on the hawkeyes. I've yet to hold one and am curious about the quality of the walnut and the polish of the blueing. All the other M77s I've seen have impressed me in that dept. and I hope the hawkeye follows suit.

I have had a couple of the LH Ruger M77MIIs. Great rifles.

My latest, a SS 30-06, has surprised me with its accuracy. Best factory rifle I've had to date......... and if they come in a 'leftie' I've owned pretty much all of them. It'll be interesting to see how it does once I bed/float/trigger work and do some load development for it.

Can't think of a much better choice for a 'go to rifle' than what you've got in mind.:)

Yeah, it's the MII, not the Hawkeye. No SS in the Hawkeye for us lefties according to Ruger.

I love the rifle, only thing I wish was different......... less shine. It could use a bead blast or something. Mine will likely get a matte black Duracoat or similar after the hunting slows down..........

ruger rifles

I picked up a new Hawkeye Alaskan a few months ago.......shoots less than MOA with factory ammo....good trigger.......definitely good value for the money....

I am also a Lefty.

I had a close look the Ruger's but decided to pass. I just find them clunky or something.............

I am real happy with my 700's

Good luck in your search.

I like the tang safety more, more intuitive for me. I find that the 3 position wing safety on my Hawkeye Alaskan is awkward. When in the full safe position, the little knob that you work with your thumb is too small and tucks in too close to the end of the bolt. I would like to see the thumb hook thingy to be bigger or something. I carry the rifle in the 2nd position due to this. I have never had the bolt open on any rifle while carrying it, so no biggie I guess. Solid, capable rifles. They will shoot minute of moose or deer for your lifetime and probably a couple more generations too. I like Rugers, and Remingtons, and Brno/CZ, and Winchesters, and Brownings, and Savage, and and and...
