Hey all,

I was looking through my new SIR Spring and Summer Catalogue and I saw a few .17's that look pretty cheaper and wondering if they are any good. Can you guys tell me anything about these guns like how are they and are they worth it? How do they compare to a .22 like a 10/22?

Marlin 917VS or 917VSF

or

The Savage Model 93R17 FV with accutrigger

Any comments would be great.

Thanks

So these are great guns. How do they compare to a .22? Are the bullets just quciker and thats it or is price of ammo also a concern?

These are fairly cheap, the savage is like $270 and the Marlins are about $380 and $350 which is pretty good.

the 17 HMR is a 22 mag necked down to fit the 17 cal bullets....they are pretty much flat out to 100 meters,hell,maybe a bit further.....no comparison to a 22LR in terms of speed and accuracy..ammo is a bit pricey compared to the 22 LR though...on average about $9-$14 /50 rounds depending upon where you live

You could buy a plain jane heavy barrel model for half that,and then order a stock from Boyds in the states,and still be under the asking price of this rifle...in my opinion anyway:cool:

There is also this Savage which looks very very nice for like $470.

Very nice

Well $10 for 50 block of ammo isn't too bad.

As for the rifle, would you just buy a crapper savage and then a stock and thats it or would you order all the peices seperatly?

my preference would be the laminated Marlin or the Savage if it comes with a wooden stock....either one in a heavy barrel....the Savages are not crappers in my opinion...damn accurate for the $$$'s ya pay for them...the accutrigger would be nice as well,easily adjustable...damn...now ya got me thinking about one...LOL

I like the look of the marlins but I like the Savage better because of the price. There is also a Stevens Model 310 for $240 for a .17 but it looks like the Stevens 200.

I was going to get a 10/22 but why when these guns are just a bit more expensive but look kewl

I like the NEF Sportster in .17HMR, personally;

And here's a really cool lookin' Marlin semi in .17HM2;

The Mach 2 stuff is a little bit cheaper and gives slightly less performance than the HMR stuff. For example, 17HMR has the same energy at 166.7 yards as 17HM2 does at 100 yards. Here's a side-by-side pic of each round by size (note; the one in the middle is .17HM2);

Personally, I wouldn't bother with the HM2, the HMR is where it's at. That being said, .22 WMR is a good round also, and with the .17 HMR being so good you might be able to find a few people getting rid of their .22 WMR's for cheap. Ammo would be cheaper than .17 HMR as well (while still being more expensive than .22 LR).

Edit; Just found this site again, take a look at these rifles (warning; have a towel ready to mop up your drool!!!)

To me,the Stevens are last years left over parts from the Savage line up...identical rifles,just that Savage has the accutrigger

The Stevens 200 rifles are identical to the Savage model 110 rifles in the centerfire category

Any 17HMR will amaze you,no matter what brand it is...trust me

poweredbybeer,

Thanks for the excellent reply. Lots of good info in that post. That gun from excelarms looks amazing to me. wow. If I do get a .17 then I will get the HMR. I think I can handle the more expensive bullets, it's not like its a buck a bullet so all it good.

Chola,

I wasn't bashing the Stevens, I was just saying it looked like a Stevens 200 the .17 version. I will go check out that forum, I thought it was for 10/22's only. I never knew it was for everything.

Thanks for the link

I realize you weren't bashing the Stevens or the Savages...didn't mean to come off that way at all...whatever one you get,I'm sure you'll be happy with....
The RFC site has info on darn near every rimfire made,just cruise down the page a bit and you will find all the other maufacturers

I had the Savage synthetic stock with the s/s barrel and was not to impressed. I had problems with accuracy at 100 yards but with the new accutrigger might be great. I also found the rifle heavy toward the front and was not balanced well at all. The light weight synthetic stock didn’t help either. It also had lots of glare from the s/s barrel especial when I had my scope cranked up to a higher power. The 17 HMR was a nice little round to shoot when I had it but found it a pain for cleaning with that small bore. Hopefully you get a good one and will enjoy shooting it. Good luck...

Well, I decieded that my 10/22 just wasn't doing it for me anymore so I stopped at WS the other day and picked up this Savage 17HMR (Tx to the young guy with the nasty cold :eek: for his help at the counter), topped it with a Tasco I had kicking around, and the gaffers better beware on Sat :D

Well I am just asking questions now. I probably won't buy anything for a month or two as I just bought my first rifles a few days ago. I am just getting some information right now.

Maybe, but with this you get the accutrigger and stainless along with a decent stock on it already.

Just waiting for mine to come in, I got mine for a little less than SIR price but even at $ 465 (SIR) its still worth every penny and a good deal as well IMHO.
