Found this .243 casing out at the range the other day. Wrong calibre in wrong gun?

Shoulder wouldn't be that blown out in a .308 chamber. My guess is a .30-06; it looks similar to some .308 cases I found that guys where shooting through a .30-06.

it almost looks like someone tried to make a blank round. With the primer poped out like that tho, they eather did not put the primer in properly or it was an over presure issue is my guess.

243 fired in a 30-06 is my guess. Sadly not a rare occurence, but it's usually 308 in a 30-06. The popped primer a typical result of the low pressure that would have resulted.

I'm surprised trhe primer is still in the case. It would make a nice new wildcat cartridge if you like straight walled cases. You'll have to trim back that front end a bit though.

Once watched three guys struggle trying to figure out why their .308 BAR would only fire every fourth or fifth shot and wasn't extracting the cases (live or empty) properly.
They where swearing up and down about how crap Browning guns are and that they would never go hunting with a Browning because it would fail in the field.
After probably 30-40min they realized it was actually chambered in .30-06.

Hate to think what the throat of the barrel looked like after firing a half dozen .308 rounds in it.
The promptly cleaned up all their brass (I saw a few and they looked like OP's picture) and left without saying a word to each other.
They didn't even check the fired cases to see if there where weird marks from firing. If they had they would have realized their mistake sooner.

Somewhere on my piles of shi.... uh stuff, I have a couple blown out cases. The best one looks like it was shot in a short magnum chamber, as it is really blown out sideways. Figure it must have been a short mag as that was the only good explanation I could come up with to have that much space sideways, and still hold a .243 cartridge on the bolt face so the primer could be struck.

Used to fish the dumpster at the range to see what interesting things could be found...
Got lots of separating cases from there, handy to be able to show to a new reloader, esp. when they have been sections to see the thinning of the base.

Cheers
